MBB: Jenkins Named Third-Team All-American By Sporting News

Hempstead, N.Y. - Senior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, N.Y.) was named a third-team All-American by The Sporting News, it was announced today.

The Sporting News became the third major media outlet to award third-team All-America honors to Jenkins this postseason. SportsIllustrated.com and CBS Sports.com previously selected Jenkins for All-America distinction earlier this month.

Jenkins earned the accolades after a spectacular senior season which saw him rank sixth in the country with 22.6 points per game and become only the 63rd player in NCAA Division I history to score 2,500 career points (2,513). He was the only player in the top 15 in scoring this year to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor (51.7), and he also added a career-best 4.8 assists, the most of any player in the top 10 in scoring.

Jenkins' efforts helped Hofstra to a 21-12 final record, as well as 14-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association, tying it for second (its highest finish since joining the league in 2001-02). He was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year for the second season in a row and finished second in league history in scoring, behind only David Robinson of Navy (2,669 points).

Hofstra also reached the semifinals of the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, where it fell to eventual league champion Old Dominion 77-69. The Pride also earned a bid to the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) for the second year in a row.

Jenkins will next turn his attention to the next level, as he has a strong chance to become the first Hofstra Men's Basketball player to be chosen in the NBA Draft since Speedy Claxton was a first-round pick of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2000. Jenkins will compete in the Portsmouth Invitational for NBA Draft prospects in April.
