Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Baseball team closes out the
regular season and will look to secure the #2 seed in the upcoming CAA
Championship when it hosts William & Mary in a three-game set beginning
with a doubleheader on Friday. The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m.
Hofstra needs to win one game or have Delaware and George
Mason lose a game to lock up the two-seed and get a first round bye.
The matchup pits the top hitting team in the CAA in Hofstra
(.341 team average) against the top pitching team in the league in William
& Mary (2.90 team ERA).
Hofstra enters the weekend off a 2-1 series win at Towson.
The Pride (31-19, 18-9 CAA) dropped the first game, but rebounded to take the
next two to pass the 30-win plateau for the first time in program history.
Individually, Danny Poma will look to add to his single
season hit record and reach the 100-hit mark. The senior enters his final home stand
with 95 hits on the season. Jared Hammer also has a record within reach as he
needs eight RBIs to pass Ethan Paquette's mark of 70 in a season that was set
in 2010. In addition to Poma, seniors Kevin Flynn and T.J. Thomas are also playing
their final home series. The trio will be recognized before Saturday's game.
The Tribe (30-23, 11-16 CAA) were swept in their weekend
series by UNCW, but enter this weekend on a two-game win streak as well after
non-conference wins over Longwood and George Washington on Monday and Tuesday.
Pitching matchups for the series will be Joe Burg (4-1,
4.75) versus Brett Koeheler (6-2, 3.16) in game one and John Tiedemann (7-3,
4.32) against Matt Davenport (6-5, 1.88) in game two. Nick Kozlowski (1-0, 3.12)
will get the Saturday start for the Pride, while William & Mary's starter
has yet to be announced.
