Harrisonburg, VA - Kenny Jackson went 3-for-5 with three
RBIs and Nick Kozlowski, Cody Normand and Andrew Barbarino held the Rams to 11
hits and just two runs as Hofstra staved off elimination with a 4-2 win over
VCU at the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championship at Veterans
Memorial Park.
Hofstra improved to 34-21 on the year and advances to play
Delaware in an elimination game Friday night. VCU sees its season end at 34-25.
Hofstra wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, scoring
twice in the top of the first. Danny Poma led off the game by reaching on an
error and went to second on a one-out single from Matt Ford. After a double
steal, Jared Hammer grounded out to short to drive home Poma for a 1-0 lead. Jackson followed with an opposite field single to left that plated Ford
to make it 2-0.
Hofstra added a run in the third as Hammer singled, moved to
second on a wild pitch and scored on Jackson's single up the middle to make it
a 3-0 lead.
The Rams cracked the scoreboard in the fourth as Taylor
Buran and Chris Ayers started the inning with singles and a one-out walk to
Brent Mikionis loaded the bags. Nick Abrahamson lifted a sacrifice fly to
center to drive in the first run, but Kozlowski struck out Paul Nice to end the
threat.
The Pride added an insurance run in the fifth as Ford walked
to lead off and went to second on a ground out. Jackson followed with his third
consecutive RBI single to give Hofstra a 4-1 advantage.
Mikionis led off the VCU sixth with a home run off of
Normand, but that was the last run the Rams would score. The Rams threatened in
the seventh but stranded two runners. Barbarino then came on and threw a
perfect eighth and allowed a hit in the ninth before retiring the side for his
third save of the year.
Kozlowski, who was making his fourth and arguably his
biggest start of his career, allowed seven hits, three walks and one run over
five innings. He also struck out three in improving to 2-0 on the season.
Kyle Pelchy took the loss for VCU, allowing three runs on
eight hits in four innings to fall to 4-4 on the season.
Ford also had three hits for the Pride, while T.J. Thomas
had two doubles.Poma's one hit in the game was his 100th of the season, extending his single season record.
Ayers had three hits for VCU, while three other batters had
two hits each.
