Hempstead, NY - Hofstra wrestler Steve Bonanno has been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team for the 2012-13 season, the NWCA announced. It is the third NWCA All-Academic Award for the Wantagh, New York native after receiving the honor in 2011 and 2012.

This year's NWCA Individual All-Academic Team is comprised of 82 total athletes, four NCAA Champions, four NCAA Runner-Ups, 21 All-Americans and 72 NCAA qualifiers. Bonanno recorded one of the five highest grade point averages on the team. Leading the way was Penn State's Matthew Brown with a 3.97 GPA in Criminology. Virginia's Matthew Snyder (3.95), Bonanno (3.77), North Dakota State's Evan Knutson (3.755), and Ohio State University's Cody Magrum (3.745) rounded out the top five.

A product of Wantagh High School, Bonanno is a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year having won the award in 2012 and 2013. He has also been a Dean's List member during every semester at Hofstra, a five-time CAA Commissioner's Academic Award recipient and a member of the Hofstra Athletics Academic Honor Roll his entire career.

Bonanno earned his undergraduate degree in accounting in May, 2012 but returned for the 2012-13 school year to begin work on a MBA degree and complete his final year of eligibility on the Pride Wrestling team.

On the mat, Bonanno, a 2012 NCAA All-American, reached the 125-pound finals at the CAA Championship all four years and was the CAA champion in 2012 and 2013. He had a 19-12 overall record in 2012-13 including a 12-9 mark in dual matches and a 6-0 record in the CAA. He captured his second CAA title at 125 pounds this past March, going 3-0 in the conference tournament and defeating the second seed Rob Deutsch from Old Dominion, 3-2 for the CAA title.

Bonanno, a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier, closed out his Hofstra career by winning 12 of his last 17 matches to finish with a 103-50 mark.

Bonanno was also voted to the 2013 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)-Capital One Academic All-District 1 Men's At-Large first team last week. He earned his second Capital One Academic All-District 1 Men's At-Large first team selection after being named in 2012.

Bonanno, a 2012 CoSIDA-Capital One Men's At-Large Academic All-American second team selection, will advance to the men's at-large national ballot along with the first team honorees from the seven other districts. The 2013 CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men's At-Large Team, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected, will be announced on Thursday, June 6.

The CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All-America men's at-large district nominations can include student-athletes from fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
