Hempstead, NY – Hofstra defenseman Mark Mullen has been named to the 2013 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar-All-America Team, the USILA announced.

Mullen, a graduate-student who earned a bachelor's degree in health science in 2012 and is working on a master's degree in sports science, anchored the Hofstra defense that ranked third in the country this week. The All-Colonial Athletic Association first team selection in 2013 started all 14 games this season.

He led the Pride close defense in ground balls with 21, and caused turnovers with 13 while usually defending one of the top players from the opposition. Mullen picked up four ground balls against St. Joe's and three against Delaware, Princeton and Harvard. He ranked 130th in Division I in caused turnovers this season, forcing three turnovers against St. John's and two against Massachusetts and Penn State.

A USILA Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach, be a student in his final year of eligibility and possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). He must also be an All-American, a member of a North/South team, or an outstanding league or conference player. He will have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution, and to college lacrosse both on and off the field.

Mullen, who earned All-CAA second team honors as a junior, played in 57 games during his Pride career. He was a five-time CAA Commissioner's Academic Award recipient as well as a five-time Hofstra Athletics Academic Honor Roll member. He earned Dean's List honors or better in all of his years at Hofstra.

Mullen's selection marks the third consecutive year that a Hofstra student-athlete has been named to the USILA Scholar All-America Team following goalie Andrew Gvozden in 2012 and Michael Skudin in 2011. Hofstra has nine USILA Scholar All-America Team selections since 2000.
