Champions Once Again; Hofstra Wins Third Consecutive CAA Crown

Hempstead, NY - Eliot Goldthorp's goal 5:34 into the first overtime broke a 1-1 tie and No. 17 Hofstra held on to win the 2023 Coastal Athletic Association Championship, 2-1, over Monmouth Saturday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The CAA title was Hofstra's third consecutive CAA Championship and seventh in program history.

Hofstra, the top seed in the Championship, moved to 13-3-4 on the season and will await its NCAA Championship opponent when the bids are announced Monday at 1 p.m. Monmouth, the second seed, sees its season end at 8-4-6.

Hofstra opened the scoring at the 19:27 mark when Albert Kang sent a pass into the box that was one-touched by Bjorn van Gorkom to Teddy Baker, who buried a shot into the far corner for his third goal of the season.

The Pride would hold the lead until the 82:52 mark when Stefan Mason was called for a foul in the box. The foul resulted in a red card for Mason due to an earlier yellow card and Ban Zakowski converted the penalty kick to tie the score at one. Playing down a man Hofstra was able to close out the final seven minutes unscathed and get to overtime.

Hofstra would draw a foul just outside the box, resulting in a free kick from 19 yards out and dead center. Goldthorp took the free kick and hooked a shot over the Hawks' six-man wall into the upper corner for his eighth of the season.

The Pride held off a furious rally by Monmouth in the second 10-minute overtime as the Hawks took six shots. Two of them were on target with Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel making a pair of saves in the extra session. The senior netminder would finish with five saves on the night.

Monmouth keeper Eryk Dymora made one save and had one of the Hawks shots on goal as he played forward in the waning moments looking for the equalizer.
