Wilmington, NC – Graduate forward Zeke Upshaw scored a game-high 27 points and tied the school record for three-pointers in a game with seven as the Hofstra Men’s Basketball team captured a 69-64 victory over UNCW on Wednesday evening at Trask Coliseum.

Upshaw tied the school record which was set by Frank Walker vs. Florida Southern in 1987-88 and tied by Jason Hernandez (vs. New Hampshire in 1999-200), Cornelius Vines (vs. UNCW in 2009-10) and Mike Moore (vs. Binghamton in 2011-12).

Sophomore forward/guard Jordan Allen and junior forward/center Moussa Kone joined Upshaw in double figures as they each chipped in with 10 points. Allen added five rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Kone pulled down six rebounds.

The win gives Hofstra back-to-back victories for the first time this season and also ends a nine-game road losing skid for the Pride dating back to a 65-56 win over UNCW on February 9, 2013. Hofstra improved to 6-11 and 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play with the win.

UNCW falls to 6-12 and 0-3 in conference action with its eighth straight loss.

Hofstra would take a four-point advantage (35-31) into the halftime break as Upshaw led all scorers with 13 points, including four three-pointers.

Neither team was able to create much breathing room in the opening 20 minutes as the largest lead for either team was five-point Seahawk advantage with roughly ten minutes left in the half.

The Seahawks notched the first four points of the contest before layup from Allen got the Pride on the board. Hofstra would take its first lead of the contest, courtesy of an Upshaw three-pointer with 15:04 on the clock that gave the visitors an 11-10 lead.

The back and forth first half would continue throughout the opening stanza before Hofstra scored the final six points of the first half, to take its largest lead of the half at 35-31. The final six points of the half came from the hot outside shooting of sophomore forward Darren Payen and Upshaw, who each drained a three-pointer in the final 44 seconds.

Hofstra would its lead to double digits, 45-35, just over four minutes into the second half as they used a 10-4 run to push the lead to the largest of the game.

The lead would quickly evaporate as the Seahawks climbed back into it with an 11-1 run and knotted the score at 46 with 11:51 left in regulation following a Luke Hager three-pointer.

With Hofstra holding a narrow one-point advantage with under seven minutes to play, Upshaw hit his seventh three-pointer of the game, tying the school record, with 5:57 showing on the clock. The Pride would stretch the margin to six as graduate guard Dion Nesmith drove the lane with 5:02 remaining to make it 61-55 in favor of the Pride.

UNCW had one run left in them and a pair of free throws from Cedrick Williams would close the gap to 62-60 with just 2:56 left. Freshman guard Chris Jenkins would come up huge at that point, though, as he calmly drained two free throws with 2:18 to play to push the lead back to four. The Seahawks got within three in the final 1:16, but an Upshaw layup with 29 ticks left sealed the victory and allowed Hofstra to escape with the five-point victory.

Senior forward/center Stephen Nwaukoni had his third straight game with double-digit rebounds as he posted a game-high 10 in the contest. Nesmith dished out a game-high six assists for Hofstra.

Chris Dixon led UNCW with 15 points, while Williams added 14 points and five rebounds. Addison Spruill chipped in with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Hofstra will continue on the road this week as the Pride will close the non-conference portion of their schedule on Sunday when it travels to SMU for a 6 p.m. local time game (7 p.m. EST).
