Hempstead, NY- Hofstra will be looking to clinch a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Tournament with a single victory during a two-game road stretch against Delaware and Towson starting Friday.
The Pride (11-6, 4-2 in conference play) can earn a sixth consecutive CAA Tournament appearance if it can knock off No. 17 Delaware (11-4, 5-1) Friday night at Fred P. Rullo Jr. Stadium. Even with a loss, Hofstra can still wrap up a playoff spot if the team can defeat Towson (6-10, 0-6) Saturday evening at Stevenson University Field.
Hofstra currently occupies the CAA's fourth spot entering Friday's game. Starting this season, the top four teams qualify for the conference tournament. A win over either Delaware or Towson would give Hofstra five conference wins.
The most conference wins Old Dominion and Northeastern, the fifth and sixth place teams, respectively, can record is five, meaning a single Hofstra victory would result at minimum in a fourth-place tie. The Pride defeated both Old Dominion and Northeastern this season, giving Hofstra the tiebreaker advantage.
The Pride will carry a six-game winning streak into Delaware. That is the team's longest winning streak since Hofstra won its first eight games to start the 2003 season.
A strong regular season finish can continue the positive momentum. The Pride is 5-0 away from Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium after finishing 2008 just 3-5 on the road. Leading the way is sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Heyde, who tied a career high with 11 saves in leading Hofstra to a win over CAA-rival Northeastern in the previous game.
Hofstra started the season with 11 freshmen and six sophomores. First-year standout Krizia Layne has contributed three goals. Darrah Rachman and Micaela Gallagher have each scored twice to complement fellow sophomore Genna Kovar's team-leading 14 goals. Sophomore Arielle Williams also has chipped in one goal and three assists.
