HOFSTRA PLACES THREE ON CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM

10/30/2009 10:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Junior defender Dana Bergstrom (Billerica, MA/Lexington Christian) was named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District I selection, while senior defender Jess Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) and junior midfielder Tiffany Yovino (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) were named to the second team in a vote of the district's sports information directors, it was announced today.

As a first-team selection, Bergstrom, who carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average as an exercise science major, is now eligible for national Academic All-America honors. That team will be voted on by a panel of sports information directors in early November.

Bergstrom is in her second year at Hofstra after transferring from Syracuse. She made her mark in high school as a goal scorer (ranking among the top 10 in Massachusetts high school history with 119), and played forward for the Pride last year. This year, though, she moved back to the defensive unit and has played every minute of every game. Hofstra has allowed only six goals in its first 10 CAA games, three fewer than any other team in the league. She also scored a goal in Hofstra's 3-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth on Oct. 22.

Yovino earned second-team all-district honors for the second season in a row. She was one of 45 players named to the preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List, which is given to the top player in Division I men's and women's soccer. A first-team All-CAA and first-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-region selection last year, Yovino, who majors in history, currently has three goals and one assist for the Pride this fall.

Crankshaw was also honored by CoSIDA for the second season in a row after earning third-team honors last year. She was also named to the NSCAA Scholar All-America team last year, after earning the Co-Defensive Player of the Year honor from the CAA. Crankshaw, who majors in public relations with a minor in sociology, is one of only four players in school history to tally 20 career assists. She also has four goals this season, three of which came in a win over Drexel.

Hofstra has a 10-4-3 record on the year, its third straight season of 10 wins or more (and 11th in the last 13 years). The Pride will play at Northeastern on Saturday for the regular season CAA title and the right to host next weekend's CAA Tournament. A win or a tie would clinch first place for Hofstra, while Northeastern could jump from second to first with a win.
