PRIDE MEN EIGHTH, WOMEN 10TH AT CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEW MARKET, VA - The Hofstra men placed eighth and the Pride women were 10th as both William and Mary  teams continued their dominance at the 2009 CAA Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships at the New Market Battlefield Saturday. The William and Mary men captured their tenth consecutive conference championship while the Tribe women claimed their seventh straight team title.

The Hofstra men tallied 225 points in the 8K, CAA Championship to place eighth in the eight-team field. Pride junior Phil Giackette (Ozone Park, NY) was Hofstra's top finisher, posting a 44th-place finish in 27:15, 2:09 behind the meet champion. Senior Mike McCristall (Hauppauge, NY) was the Pride's second finisher, placing 46th in 27:22. Sophomore Phil Shattell (Liverpool, NY) was 60th in 28:33 while freshman Kyle Wightman (Wading River, NY) was 67th in 29:11. Sophomore Derek Lockwood (Millville, MA) was the Pride's final scoring runner, clocking a time of 29:12 to finish 68th. Rounding out the Hofstra runners was sophomore Matt Wilkens (Woodbury, NY) in 76th place in 34:17 and senior Robbie Wright (Finksburg, MD) in 77th in 35:00.

The Tribe men finished with 21 points, 36 points better than second-place George Mason, which finished with 57 points. Junior Brian Sklodowski of William and Mary earned the individual title and Most Outstanding Runner of the Meet, clocking a time of 25:06. He edged out George Mason sophomore Everett Hackett, who finished in a time of 25:13.

Sophomore Chris Tyson and senior Charlie Swartz, both of William and Mary, finished third and fourth with times of 25:15 and 25:17, respectively. Delaware senior Chris Borque rounded out the top five with his time of 25:23.72. Other men's runners earning All-CAA status this year were: Max Werner, W&M (25:25.28), Ben Massam, W&M (25:27.20), Loris Hutterli, GSU (25:31.04), Harry Miller, W&M (25:32.6), Sam Horn, Mason (25:39.04), Walid Berkhedle, VCU (25:41.21), Scott Tekesky, Mason (25:41.61).

The Hofstra women tallied 295 points to finish 10h in the 10-team field. Leading the Pride women was sophomore Meghan McCloskey (Brewer, ME), who placed 68th in 24:12. Freshman Brittany Potter (Quincy, MA) was 75th in 24:27 while sophomore Katie Wiking (Farmingdale, NY) was 82nd in 24:50. Freshman Cara Mattson (East Meadow, NY) was the Pride's fourth runner, placing 84th in 24:54, and junior Riti Dhillon (Hopewell Junction, NY) was 87th in 25:04. Rounding out the Hofstra runners was: senior LeeAna Benson (Foxboro, MA), placing 100th in 26:31; senior Steph Devlin (Tomkins Cove, NY), finishing 101st in 26:47; and freshman Kirstin Kaija (East Greenwich, RI), placing 106th in 29:38.

The William and Mary women tallied 33 points, besting the Dukes of JMU by just seven points. Senior Emily Anderson won her second-straight individual title and was honored as the Most Outstanding Runner of the Meet following her time of 20:35.68 in the 6K race. Teammate Meghan Burns was the runner up, clocking a time of 20:49.02.

James Madison senior Alison Parris crossed the line in third (20.55.54), while her freshman teammate Stacey Nobles took fourth (20:59.87). George Mason freshman Rochelle Sceats rounded out the women's top five (21:01.32).

Other women's runners who earned All-CAA honors were: Janel Blancett, GSU (21:13.57), Kayley Byrne, W&M (21:30.45), Katie Gorman, JMU (21:38.22), Katie Harman, JMU (21:39.03), Laura Sinclair, Mason (21:39.94), Darcy McDonald, W&M (21:40.46), and Kelly McElroy, W&M (21:42.21).
