10/31/2009 8:00:00 PM

Boston, MA - Devin Petta and Veronica Napoli scored first half goals less than a minute apart as Northeastern captured the CAA regular season title with a 4-0 win over Hofstra.

The win moves Northeastern to 12-3-3 on the year, including 7-1-3 in the CAA. Hofstra falls to 10-5-3 overall and 7-2-2 in conference, dropping out of first place for the first time all season. Northeastern will now host the CAA Tournament next weekend on Nov. 6-8, while Hofstra will be the second seed and play third-seeded UNC Wilmington at a time to be determined. Northeastern will meet fourth-seeded James Madison, which secured its bid with a win over VCU this evening.

Hofstra did have a 22-8 advantage in shots for the day, as Northeastern goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon had 11 saves to get the shutout, 10 of which came in the second half when the Pride outshot the Huskies 15-2. Junior forward Salma Tarik (Bellmore, NY) had four of the shots on net which were saved by Gordon.

The Pride took three of the game's first four shots, before Petta headed in a free kick from Kelly Matthews at the 20:03 mark. Hofstra came down on the ensuing kick-off and sophomore midfielder Courtney Breen (Hicksville, NY) took a shot that was saved by Gordon. The Huskies then went end-to-end, and Napoli scored off a Petta feed at the 20:34 mark to stretch the lead to 2-0.

Sandra Magnusdottir extended the lead to 3-0 at the 30:58 mark to give the Huskies a commanding 3-0 lead at the half. Liza Rebello then capped off the scoring with a 25-yard goal at the 65:03 mark of the second half to make the final score 4-0.

Junior goalkeeper Krysten Farriella (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) had two saves for Hofstra, while Gordon finished with 11 for the Huskies. Hofstra also had a narrow 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Hofstra will face UNC Wilmington in the CAA Tournament for the first time. The Pride won the regular season meeting this year 2-1 at Wilmington back on Oct. 16.
