Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Athletic Department will honor three former Hofstra student-athletes chosen to Colonial Athletic Association 25th Anniversary teams at halftime of the men's basketball game against Farmingdale State on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
Women's soccer players Becky Wachsberger (East Meadow, NY) and Sue Weber (Islip, NY), along with men's soccer player Michael Todd (Cleveland, England), will be recognized for being selected to the CAA's honorary teams. As part of the 25th Anniversary of the Colonial Athletic Association, the CAA is honoring silver anniversary teams in each of its sports during this academic year. These teams consist of the 25 top players in CAA history in each sport, as voted on by a panel of coaches.
Todd was the first Division I All-American in the history of the men's soccer program, earning second team honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2006. He was also named the CAA Player of the Year in 2006, and was twice named the Most Outstanding Player of the CAA Tournament. He graduated as only the second player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau, finishing with 40 goals and 21 assists for 101 points. Included in Todd's 40 career goals were the game-winners in both of Hofstra's NCAA Tournament wins over Seton Hall in 2004 and Providence in 2006, the game-winner in the 2004 CAA championship game against Old Dominion, and a goal against #3 Wake Forest in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
Wachsberger started for four years as the goalkeeper for the Hofstra Women's Soccer team, breaking several Hofstra and CAA records in the process. She finished her career with 36 shutouts, and helped the Pride tie for the fewest goals allowed in the entire country with nine in the 2003 campaign. Her career goals against average was just 0.68, including a school record 0.45 in 2003. As a senior, Wachsberger was part of a team that won the first conference championship in school history with a 1-0 victory over VCU, before advancing to the NCAA Tournament. She was a three-time All-CAA selection, earning first-team honors as a senior, when she was also a first-team all-region selection from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Weber joined the Hofstra Women's Soccer team in 2005 and immediately stepped into the starting line up as a central defender. She led the Pride to its first-ever conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2005, when she became the first All-American in the history in the program. In 2007, she became the first two-time All-American in the history of the program, as she earned the honor once again after leading Hofstra to a school record 18 wins, including the Pride's second CAA championship and a win over Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Due largely to her leadership on the defensive unit, she was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year in all three seasons at Hofstra and was twice named the Most Outstanding Player of the CAA Tournament.
The Farmingdale State game tips off at 7 p.m. and is free of charge.
