HOFSTRA ATHLETICS FOURTH ANNUAL MENTORING NIGHT

11/24/2009 5:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - On Thursday, November 19, 2009, the Hofstra University Athletic Department held its Fourth Annual Mentoring Night at the University Club.  This event enabled student-athletes to network and gain insight from a number of enthusiastic mentors who are all athletic alumni of Hofstra.  These mentors represented a variety of career fields including accounting, business management, finance, sales, marketing, medicine, entrepreneurship, education and coaching, law, and sports administration.

The night began with a welcome from Executive Associate Director of Athletics, Danny McCabe.  He introduced mentor, Michael Colleluori, who spoke about the transition from college to the workforce.  Colleluori, who was 2009 men's lacrosse graduate, works as a Research Assistant in the Department of Hematology/Oncology Division at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

McCabe then introduced Melanie Carpenter to deliver the keynote address.  Carpenter is a Managing Partner at i-advize Corporate Communications, Inc., who graduated in 1995 and was a member of the women's basketball team.

Following the keynote address, student-athletes had the opportunity to breakout into round table discussions within areas that matched their career aspirations.  All student-athletes in attendance left with a helpful Career Center brochure, as well as information on each mentor.  The night concluded with a brief networking reception for the mentors to thank them for their participation.

Mentoring Night is just one career development initiative for our student-athletes throughout the year.  Such an event exemplifies the mission of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program in the effort to best prepare student-athletes for their professional careers.
