JENKINS, WILLIAMS HONORED BY CAA

2/1/2010 8:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week and freshman guard Chaz Williams (Brooklyn, NY) was named the Rookie of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.

Jenkins, who shared the honor with Denzel Bowles of James Madison (which Hofstra plays on Wednesday night), was named the CAA Player of the Week for the second time this year and fifth time in his career. Williams earned his first CAA Rookie of the Week honor after teammate Halil Kanacevic (Staten Island, NY) won it three times earlier this winter.

Jenkins and Williams had key roles in leading Hofstra to a 2-0 week with wins over UNC Wilmington (93-54) and Delaware (77-67). Jenkins scored 51 points in 53 minutes in the two games, while shooting 15-23 from the floor and 17-19 from the foul line. He had 21 of his 27 points against Delaware in the second half as the Pride held on for a wire-to-wire win, while his 24 points in the UNC Wilmington contest were also a game-high.

Williams, meanwhile, averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in the two contests, including 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the Delaware win. He had a couple of key plays late in that game as well, as he hit a driving lay-up as the shot clock expired to stretch Hofstra's lead to six with 1:27 to play, then stole the ball with just under 20 seconds remaining and the Pride clinging to a four-point lead. He drew an intentional foul after the steal, and then made four straight foul shots to seal the win.

Hofstra improved its record to 11-12 overall and 4-7 in the CAA with the two wins. The Pride travels to James Madison on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. contest before returning home to face Northeastern on Saturday at 4 p.m.
