Hempstead, NY - Junior forward Greg Washington (Centereach, NY) was named the GoHofstra.com Student-Athlete of the Week, it was announced today.
Washington had a key role in helping Hofstra to a 2-0 week, including falling two rebounds shy of the first triple-double in school history on Wednesday against UNC Wilmington. In that contest, Washington tied the school record for blocked shots in a game with 10, while also adding 14 points and eight rebounds as Hofstra cruised to a 93-54 win. The 10 blocks matched the standard set by Greg Springfield in the 1999-2000 season opener at New Mexico State.
Washington is closing in on two more school records for blocks. He now has 173 in his three seasons with the Pride, just five shy of the school mark held by David Taylor (1979-83). He also has 62 this season, just six shy of his own school record set last season. He averages 2.7 blocks per game, which ranks second in the CAA and 20th in the nation, while he has helped Hofstra block 6.6 shots per game as a team, which ranks 10th in the nation.
Hofstra will next be in action when it travels to James Madison on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest before returning home to face Northeastern on Saturday at 4 p.m.
