HOFSTRA RETURNS HOME TO HOST UNC WILMINGTON

2/6/2010 1:30:00 AM

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Women's Basketball team, coming off its most dominating effort of the season, will look to continue its solid play when it hosts UNC Wilmington on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Mack Sports Complex.

Hofstra defeated George Mason, 72-39, on Thursday behind 20 points from sophomore guard Nicole Capurso and 14 points from senior center Jess Fuller.  Fuller also blocked a shot in the contest, giving her 176 for her career, tops in program history.

The stellar defensive effort yielded many milestones for the Pride as the 33-point margin of victory was the most since a 83-50 win over Sacred Heart in the second game of the 2005-06 campaign.  The 39 points scored by George Mason were the fewest Hofstra has allowed in a game since a 70-39 win over Stetson on December 31, 2006.

On the offensive end, Hofstra shot 60% (30-50) from the field against the Patriots, marking the first time a Pride squad had reached the 60% plateau since shooting 60.7% (34-56) at UNC Wilmington on February 5, 2006 in a 91-76 win.

Redshirt sophomore guard Candice Bellocchio joined Capurso and Fuller in double figures with 10 points and added five against in the win over George Mason.  Senior guard Sam Brigham, who played in the 110th game of her career and hit career three-pointer number 114 against the Patriots, added eight points and a career-high tying six assists.  The 110 games played ranks seventh all-time at Hofstra and the 114 three-pointers is tied for sixth all-time.  Brigham is also less than 100 points away from becoming the 20th player in program history to reach that milestone as the Simsbury, CT native has 908 points in her career and needs just 92 to become a member of the 1,000-point club.

Freshman forward Shante Evans continues to lead Hofstra in scoring and rebounding with averages of 13.0 and 9.0, respectively.  Brigham is second in scoring with 10.1 per game, while Fuller is third in scoring at 9.1 points per game and second with 6.6 rebounds per outing.  Fuller also leads the Pride with 71 blocked shots.

UNC Wilmington, which dropped a narrow 61-58 decision to Old Dominion on Thursday, is led by Brittany Blackwell who averages team-bests of 13.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.  Greta Luksyte follows closely behind with 10.3 points per contest.

Hofstra defeated the Seahawks, 78-69, in overtime back on January 17 in the first meeting this season between the schools.
