Hempstead, NY- Hofstra faces a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference for the second consecutive weekend when it ventures to College Park to play Maryland in a three-game series starting Friday at 3 p.m.
The Pride (0-6) will turn to freshman right-hander Jared Rogers (0-2) to lead his team to its first win of the season in the series opener. Maryland (2-6) is also trying to get on a winning track and is expected to throw junior righty Brett Harman (0-2) against Rogers at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Hofstra has posted a lead in three of its six games this season, including the series finale against second-ranked ACC-member Florida State last weekend. Maryland lost its first four games but is coming off a win over Colonial Athletic Association-member Towson on Wednesday.
The Pride won the last meeting between the two schools in 2008 and carries a 1-4 record in the all-time series. Maryland is led by first-year head coach Erik Bakich.
Junior righty Sean Monaghan (East Meadow, NY) is slated to make his first Hofstra start in the middle game when he opposed left-hander Eric Potter (0-1) on Saturday. Monaghan struck out a Hofstra-high three batters in his last appearance out of the bullpen on Feb. 28 against the Seminoles.
Junior Kevin Rigopoulos (Athol, MA) will look for his first win in three starts when he starts for Hofstra in the Sunday season finale against the Terps.
Senior Elliot Hagburg (East Hanover, NJ) leads Hofstra in hitting, batting .444 with one run scored and four total bases. Hagburg, who started all 35 of his previous Hofstra games at catcher, played right field for the first time in his two-year Pride career and finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a RBI in the Pride's previous game against Florida State.
