Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Men's
Lacrosse team will begin its 2010 home schedule this Saturday, March 6 when the
Bears of Brown University come to James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
Hofstra enters the Brown game ranked 11th in the USILA Division I Coaches Poll
and 12th in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Poll. Brown, which opens
its season this week, is ranked 19th in the USILA Division I Coaches Poll and 15th
in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Poll.
Saturday's
game is the 24th meeting between Hofstra and Brown in a series that started in
1976. The Pride lead the series, 12-11. The two teams met last February in
Providence with the Pride rallying from a 10-3 third quarter deficit to post an
11-10 double-overtime victory at Brown. Hofstra junior attackman Jay Card, who
was named to the 2010 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List this week, scored the
winning goal-his fourth of the contest-with 19 seconds remaining in the second
overtime.
The
Pride (0-1) is coming off a 17-14 loss at #7 Princeton last Saturday. In that
contest, junior attackman Jamie Lincoln, a transfer from the University of
Denver, made his Hofstra debut with four goals and one assist to lead the
Pride. For his efforts, he was named the CAA Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week.
Several other Pride players stood
out on offense last week. Card, the 2009 CAA Player of the Year and the 2008
CAA Rookie of the Year, tallied two goals and two assists and had three ground
balls at Princeton. He has tallied at least one point in 16 straight games. Sophomore
midfielder Mike DeNapoli recorded the first points of his career last Saturday,
recording three goals and one assist against the Tigers. All three of his goals
came in the first half. Junior midfielder Stephen Bentz posted career-highs of
two goals and two assists at Princeton. Freshman midfielder Adrian Sorichetti,
one of the four Canadians on the Pride team, made his Hofstra debut with a goal
and two assists, while Long Island freshman John Antoniades won 21 of 30
face-offs.
The Bears of Brown hope to continue their recent run of success in 2010. Brown's
lacrosse program returned to national prominence over the last two years -
winning the Ivy League Championship in 2008 and earning an at-large bid into
the NCAA Championship last season. Under the leadership of head coach Lars
Tiffany, the New England Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009, last year's Brown
team made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997, before falling in
overtime to Johns Hopkins in the NCAA First Round. The Bears posted a 12-4
record, just one win short of the school record, and were ranked as high as
eighth nationally during the season.
Offensive firepower shouldn't be a problem for the Bears with the return of
three of its top four scorers from an offense that scored 171 goals, 52 more
than the previous season. Senior All-American attackman Thomas Muldoon
(36-11-47) and junior All-Ivy attackman Andrew Feinberg (42-16-58) are the key
cogs in an explosive Brown offense. Senior attckman Collins Carey had a
breakout year in 2009, scoring seven goals and handing out four assists for the
Bears. He had a goal and an assist against Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Tournament.
