Lawrenceville,
NJ - The Hofstra Pride has seven wrestlers still alive, including three
finalists, heading into Saturday's second and final day of the 2010 Colonial
Athletic Association Wrestling Championships at Rider University's Alumni
Gymnasium.
Hofstra, which has captured the last eight CAA titles, is in third place with
35.5 points as freshman Luke Vaith and sophomores P.J. Gillespie and Ben Clymer
have advanced to Saturday afternoon's 1 p.m. championship matches. In addition,
freshman Jamie Franco, red-shirt freshmen Tyler Banks and Paul Snyder, and
senior Jonny Bonilla-Bowman remain alive with one loss in the consolation
bracket.
While all three of Hofstra's finalists are second seeds in the Championships, Vaith
and Clymer reached the finals on a first round bye and a semifinal win.
Gillespie posted two wins Friday.
The semifinals Friday
night were a series of rematches from the past two months. At 133, Vaith
(16-17) defeated Rider's Jimmy Kirchner, 6-5, for the second time in 16 days to
advance to Saturday's championship match against Drexel's number one seed Steve
Mytych. The two finalists met on February 20 at Hofstra with Mytych posting a
10-2 major decision.
At 165, Gillespie (30-12), who captured the 149-pound title last year, had the
hardest road to the final with two matches as he defeated Drexel's Alex Rinaldi
in the quarterfinals, 15-3, and then edged third-seed Matt Kaylor from
Binghamton in the semifinals, 3-2. The two semifinalists met on February 6 with
Gillespie recording a 6-4 sudden victory win. The Long Beach, New York native will square
off against number one seed Chris Brown from Old Dominion in Saturday's final.
The two wrestlers met in January at the CAA Duals with Brown edging Gillespie,
3-1.
At 184, Ben Clymer (24-6) reached his fist championship match with a 6-5
victory over third-seed Joe Budi from Old Dominion in the semifinals. The two
met in January at the CAA Duals with Clymer winning there, 7-2. Clymer will
face Binghamton's top-seeded Nate Schiedel in the final Saturday afternoon. The
two wrestlers met on February 6 in Binghamton with Schiedel pinning Clymer in
3:09 of the match.
Four Pride wrestlers remained in the consolation bracket with senior Jonny Bonilla-Bowman, who has captured three conference titles including two with the
Pride in the CAA, the biggest surprise of the group. After a 15-7 quarterfinal win over George
Mason's Aaron Keeton, Bonilla-Bowman (17-5) dropped an 11-9 decision to Drexel's
third-seed Joe Budi in the semifinals after defeating the Dragon wrestler on February
20, 21-11. The sixth-seeded Banks (10-19) also went 1-1 at 141 pounds on
Friday, losing to third-seed Abby Rush from Boston University, 5-4, before
posting a pin of Sacred Heart's Michael Impellizeri in 6:46 in the consolation
bracket. The fourth-seeded Snyder (11-15) also went 1-1 at 285 pounds Friday,
losing to fifth-seed Grant Chapman from Old Dominion, 2-1 in the quarterfinals
before pinning George Mason's Adam Barnette in 1:44 in the consolation bracket.
Freshman Jamie Franco (6-15) dropped a 15-2 major decision to 125-pound, top-seed
James Nicholson from Old Dominion in the quarterfinals, but rallied for a 10-4
decision over Rider's Illyass Elmsaouri in the consolation bracket.
Three Hofstra wrestlers ended their seasons Friday with 0-2 marks in the
Championship. At 149 pounds, junior Jeff Rotella (3-21) dropped a 15-0 tech
fall to top-seed Mike Kessler from Rider in the quarterfinals and then dropped
a 7-1 decision to Drexel's Brett McCurdy in the consolation bracket. Senior Jon
Rothman (2-19) was also knocked out of the Championships at 174 pounds with a
7-3 loss to George Mason's top-seeded Bagna Tovuujav in the quarterfinals, and
a 10-5 loss to Drexel's David Woodall in the consolations. Senior Anthony Tortora (8-20) ended his Hofstra career with a 13-0 loss to fourth-seeded Jack
Callender from Drexel in the 197-pound quarterfinals, and a 5-1 loss to
Binghamton's Anthony Esposito in the consolation match.
