HOFSTRA SET TO FACE TEMPLE, VILLANOVA AND ST. JOSEPH'S THIS WEEKEND

3/10/2010 11:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY- Hofstra will look to end a season-opening 12-game road trip on a positive note when it travels to Temple, Villanova and St. Joseph's for single road games this weekend.

The Pride (0-9) will be looking for its first win of the season against Temple on Friday at 2 p.m. Like Hofstra, the Owls (0-10) are also trying to find the winning formula. Junior right-hander Sean Monaghan (East Meadow, NY) is looking to build on his stellar outing against Atlantic Coast Conference member-Maryland. In his first Hofstra start, Monaghan (0-1) limited the Terps to just two runs (one earned) on three hits in six innings, logging the Pride's first quality start in 2010.

Monaghan, who leads the staff with 9 1/3 innings pitched, took the hard luck loss against Maryland and will try to rebound against Temple right-hander Matt Mongiardini. The graduate-student is 0-3 with a 6.91 ERA.

Hofstra will stay local and play the Wildcats on Saturday at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. Villanova entered the week sporting a 9-2 record. The schools have played just three times in history with the Wildcats winning all three. An 11-2 win in 2003 marked the last meeting between the teams. Game time is set for 1:15 p.m.

The Pride closes out its nearly month-long sojourn away from Hempstead with a Sunday matinee against St. Joseph's at Campbell's Field, home of the Atlantic League's Camden Riversharks. Among the three opponents Hofstra will face this week, the Pride carries the most history against St. Joseph's despite the schools not playing each other in 30 years. The Hawks are 15-4 all-time, but the last meeting came in 1980.  The matchup will renew what was formerly a regular fixture on Hofstra's schedule. The teams squared off 16 times total between 1970-80, including twice per season from 1970-75.

Seniors Ethan Paquette (West Burke, VT), Elliot Hagburg (East Hanover, NJ) and Matt Prokopowicz (Massapequa, NY) led Hofstra's offense attack last week and will try to help the Pride avoid its first 0-10 start since 2006. All three carry slugging percentages of .400 or better entering the week. Paquette is just one of two Hofstra players to start all of his team's nine games this season and is batting .333 with one home run and a Pride-best 15 RBIs.
