Hempstead, NY - The 10th-ranked
Hofstra Men's Lacrosse Team (1-1) returns to action Saturday night, March 13 when
the Pride host the seventh-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University (4-1)
at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time for the contest, presented by Modell's
Sporting Goods, is 7 p.m.
The Pride is coming off a 15-12 victory over the 19th-ranked Brown Bears at
Shuart Stadium last Saturday. Junior attackman Stephen Bentz recorded
career-highs of three goals and two assists to lead Hofstra to its first win of
the season. Junior midfielder Steve DeNapoli, sophomore middies Brad Loizeaux, and
Mike DeNapoli and freshman middie Adrian Sorichetti each scored twice for the
Pride in the win. The Pride's 29 goals that they have scored in their two games
are the most in consecutive games since the 2006 team tallied 31 in back-to-back
contests against Stony Brook (18) and Harvard (13). Hofstra ranks fourth in the
country in scoring this season with a 14.5 goals per game average.
Bentz is off to a hot start, posting five goals and four assists in his games
against Princeton and Brown. Junior transfer Jamie Lincoln, who tallied a goal
and two assists last week against Brown, now has five goals and three assists
this season. Mike DeNapoli has added five goals and one assist in two outings.
Freshman goalie Rob Bellairs, who played the second half of the season opener
against Princeton, made his first start against Brown and made seven saves last
week. He has a13.33 goals against average.
The Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins are coming off a 16-10 victory over the
University of Maryland at Baltimore County last Tuesday to boost their record
to 4-1. The Blue Jays, who suffered their first loss of the season in a 11-10
overtime loss to Princeton last Saturday, have defeated Manhattan (14-3),
Delaware (15-7) and Siena (8-7) in addition to UMBC this season.
Johns Hopkins, which returns 31 players from their 10-5 squad of a year ago,
are led in scoring by senior attackman Steven Boyle with 17 goals and nine
assists. Boyle tallied three goals and four assists against UMBC last Tuesday.
Senior midfielder Michael Kimmel, who notched three goals and two assists on
Tuesday, has recorded 10 goals and nine assists in 2010. Junior Kyle Wharton
tallied three goals and two assists on Tuesday to boost his season totals to nine
goals and five assists. Senior Michael Gvozden, brother of Hofstra sophomore
goalie, tends to the cage for the Blue Jays and has a 7.29 goals against
average and a .573 save percentage in five games.
Saturday's game is the 23rd meeting between Hofstra and Johns Hopkins in a
series that began in 1974. The Blue Jays hold an 18-4 series advantage. But the
Pride has captured two of the last five encounters, winning at Shuart Stadium
in 2006 (11-6) and 2008 (8-7 in OT). The two teams last met on March 7, 2009 at
Homewood Field in Baltimore with the Blue Jays recording a 12-7 victory.
The Pride, who are in
the middle of a three-game homestand, will host Sacred Heart on Saturday, March
20 before hitting the road for games at St. John's (March 23) and new
CAA-member Massachusetts (March 27).
