Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University junior Lauren Clifton was chosen as the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Tennis Co-Player of the Week today, the conference office announced this morning. It marks the first award of the season for Clifton, who shared the award with Megan Doran of Delaware.
Clifton starred for the Pride last week as she lead Hofstra to an undefeated week in winning all three of their matches, a 4-3 win over Sacred Heart, a 7-0 win over Hartford and a 5-2 triumph over conference rival George Mason.
Clifton was unbeaten all week as she went a combined 6-0 for the Pride, compiling a 3-0 mark in singles and doubles (with Sonia Tsay). In her three singles matches, Clifton only dropped a total of five games as she started it off with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Darcy Demers of Sacred Heart. She followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win over Maggie Sabatino of Hartford before closing her stellar week with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Alison Wingo of George Mason.
All three of her matches were played at second singles and the junior from Woodstock, Georgia would team with Tsay at second doubles for an unblemished 3-0 mark there as well. The duo picked up Hofstra's only doubles win against Sacred Heart with an 8-6 victory before closing the week with an 8-0 win over Hartford and an 8-2 win over George Mason.
Hofstra will open play at the CAA Championship tomorrow when they take on Delaware at 11:30 a.m. The conference tournament will take place at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
