Hofstra and No. 17 St. John's played to a 0-0 exhibition tie in the Second Annual Supervisor's Challenge at Burns Park in Massapequa, before the Red Storm won the title for the second year in a row 4-2 in penalty kicks.
Both teams had quality chances throughout the match, as the Pride hit one post, one crossbar and missed an empty net, while St. John's hit one post, one crossbar and had a breakaway stopped.
The first half was largely uneventful, as the Pride held a narrow 2-1 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes. Senior forward Johannes Grahn (Tibro, Sweden) had the best chance for Hofstra as he got to a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box with the goalkeeper out of net, but pushed his low shot just wide of the left post.
Junior goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Killingworth, CT) actually made the best save on the day in the first half on a ball that wasn't even a shot. St. John's sent a hard cross into the box, and the Pride defense nearly re-directed the ball into the net for an own goal, but Cumpstone sprawled to his right to keep the ball from going into the side netting.
Hofstra had two golden chances late in regulation. Freshman Tyler Botte (West Islip, NY) cracked a 30-yard line drive that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced back into play. Junior forward Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados) also got loose at the top of the six-yard box and re-directed a low cross off the left post.
St. John's also nearly scored late as Andres Vargas headed a cross from 12 yards out that bounced off the crossbar. Vargas would also hit the post in the second overtime, before sophomore goalkeeper Adam Janowski (Coram, NY) made a save on the rebound on a shot from Bruce Ayala. Janowski also came off his line to smother a St. John's breakaway attempt at the top of the 18-yard box to preserve the shutout.
St. John's had one final chance in the closing seconds of the second overtime as the Red Storm lined up a shot at the top of the penalty area, but freshman defender Daniel Christiansen (Doyleston, PA) made a strong defensive play, diving to smother the shot with his foot. Christiansen injured his ankle on the play, but not before ensuring the game would finish in a 0-0 tie.
The Red Storm finished with a 9-6 edge in shots, including 4-0 in overtime after the Pride held a narrow 6-5 edge after the regulation 90 minutes. Both teams used all of their depth, as Hofstra played 24 players and closed the final 15 minutes of regulation with 10 players who had no prior varsity experience (nine freshmen and one sophomore who did not play last year). St. John's also used 23 players on the day.
Freshman defender Shaun Foster (Southport, England) was named the Most Valuable Player from Hofstra, while senior defender Kyle Hoffer earned the honor for St. John's.
Hofstra will open the 2010 regular season next Wednesday, Sept. 1 when it hosts Stony Brook at 7:30 p.m.
