ALBANY, NY - Junior Christina Patrick scored 13 minutes into overtime to give
the Great Danes of Albany a 1-0 victory over the Hofstra Pride in the second
round of the Capital Land College Classic at the University at Albany Sunday
afternoon. Albany improves to 2-0 on the season while the Pride fall to 0-2.
Patrick, a forward from Reading, Pennsylvania, notched her second game-winning,
overtime goal of the young season Sunday by coming in from the right, on a
one-on-one situation, and beating Hofstra goalie Amanda Heyde for the victory.
For the second consecutive day, Hofstra was kept off the scoreboard despite 11
shots including six on goal. Like Saturday, the Pride started off slow, taking
just two shots in the first half. The Great Danes fired seven shots at Heyde in
the first 35 minutes, forcing the junior from Yorktown Heights, New York to
make three of her seven saves in the contest.
The Pride attacked more in the second half, taking eight shots as Albany
sophomore goalie Kristi Troch, who came in at halftime in relief of starting
senior Christine Hoffman (1 save), and tallied four saves. But Albany was
equally aggressive, taking six shots with Heyde making four saves in the second
half.
Hofstra had the first opportunity to win the game in overtime on a shot by
sophomore Krizia Layne. But Troch (5 saves) made the save just 1:12 before the
winning goal that started on a Pride defensive miscue. Albany outshot the
Pride, 14-11 with freshman forward Daphne Voormolen sharing game-high honors
with Hofstra junior Genna Kovar with six shots.
The Pride will return
to action next Saturday, September 4 when they host the University of Vermont
at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium at 1 p.m.
