MSOC: Hofstra Falls In Overtime In 2010 Season Opener

9/2/2010 1:56:00 AM

Hempstead, N.Y. - Kyle Schlesinger scored with 51 seconds left in the first overtime as Stony Brook defeated Hofstra 1-0 in its 2010 season opener on Wednesday evening in front of 787 fans at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The game-winning goal was scored on a quick counter-attack. Wilber Bonilla had the ball in the middle of the field and played it to the left to Marc Godelman, Godelman then sent a cross to the far post and Schlesinger crashed down the middle of the field and toe-poked the ball underneath Hofstra goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Killingworth, CT).

The Pride had several great chances in the early part of the second half. Sophomore midfielder Mike Annarumma (Massapequa Park, NY) had a shot that deflected on net and was saved by Seawolves goalkeeper Stefan Manz. The rebound bounced down and freshman midfielder Jon Watkin (Doncaster, England) had a chance with Manz lying on the ground, but didn't get much on the shot and it rolled to Manz on the goal line.

Senior midfielder Steven Ehrichs (Brentwood, NY) also had a good chance on a header at the top of the six-yard box, but Manz read the play and made a save at the near post. Cumpstone helped keep the game scoreless late in regulation when Will Casey sent a long cross from the left side that ended up bending on net, before Cumpstone was just able to tip the ball off the post.

Stony Brook finished with a 13-8 edge in shots, including 2-0 in overtime, and a 9-2 advatnage in corners.  Manz had six saves for Stony Brook and Cumpstone finished with four for Hofstra.

The Pride will next be in action when it travels to Iona on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest before returning home to face Saint Peter's on Monday evening at 6 p.m.
