9/2/2010 8:05:00 PM

The Hofstra Men's Basketball team added junior point guard Stevie Mejia (Boston, Mass./Lawrence Academy) to the 2010-11 roster, it was announced today by Head Coach Mo Cassara.

Mejia, a transfer from the University of Rhode Island, will enroll at Hofstra this fall and sit out one season, per NCAA transfer regulations. He will then have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2011-12 season.

As a sophomore last season, Mejia led the Atlantic 10 Conference and ranked eighth in the country in assist to turnover ratio. He appeared in all 36 games for the Rams, who finished 26-10 on the year and reached the semifinals of the Postseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT). He tallied 127 assists overall on the season, compared to only 46 turnovers, and shot a team-best 78 percent from the foul line. His two-year record with Rhode Island was 47-21, while his career totals with the Rams include 197 assists and 86 turnovers, a ratio of 2.3 to 1.

Mejia was named the Gatorade High School Player of the Year in Massachusetts after his senior year at Lawrence Academy. He led his Lawrence squads to a 51-7 record in his two years, including a New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSCA) championship in 2006-07 and a championship game appearance in 2007-08. He was a two-time all-tournament team selection at the National Prep School Invitational and was an honorable mention McDonald's All-American. As a senior, he averaged 19.7 points and 6.0 assists per game, after averaging 18.0 points and 5.0 assists as a junior.

Mejia is the fifth new player to join the Pride this spring, joining junior college transfer Dwan McMillan, and incoming freshmen Roland Brown, Shemiye McLendon and Stephen Nwaukoni.

Hofstra opens the 2010-11 season on Nov. 13 against Farmingdale State before facing North Carolina in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Nov. 19 in a game televised nationally on ESPN2.
