MSOC: Hofstra Strikes Twice Late For 2-1 Win Over Iona

9/4/2010 8:09:00 PM

New Rochelle, N.Y. - Mike Annarumma (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados) scored two late goals as Hofstra overcame a 1-0 deficit and captured a 2-1 road win over Iona on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

With the win, the Pride levels its record at 1-1 on the young season, while Iona also sees its record fall to 1-1 on the year.

Just over two minutes after Iona took a 1-0 lead, the Pride answered as Annarumma stepped in to steal a pass 40 yards from goal. He turned the corner into the left side of the penalty area and slotted a low shot into the side netting at the far post for his first collegiate goal with 17:45 to play.

The Pride then took its first lead as freshman midfielder Florian Popp (Bautzen, Germany) chipped a pretty pass over the top of the Iona defense to send Carrington in alone. Carrington took one dribble and hit a low shot that deflected off the inside of the left post and crossed over the line for his first goal of the year, putting the Pride ahead 2-1 with 7:25 left in the contest.

The game was tied 0-0 before Iona finally broke through with just under 20 minutes to play. Samuel Adjei had the ball near the right corner flag and turned the corner past two Hofstra defenders along the end line. Doug Stephens then settled just outside the six-yard box, spun, and hit a shot into the lower-right side of the net with 19:58 to play.

Iona had one chance to tie in the final minute as Adjei got to a bouncing ball in the box with 25 seconds to play, but he didn't get much on the shot and junior goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Killingworth, Conn.) made a routine save to preserve the win.

The first half was mostly uneventful, with Iona holding a 5-2 edge in shots. Cumpstone was tested twice from distance and made saves both times, including one on a 20-yard shot from Stephens that he dove to deflect wide of the right post for a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Lukas Ahman (Sodergard, Sweden) had the best chance for Hofstra when he redirected a shot inside the six-yard box that he pushed wide of the left post.

Hofstra started a young line-up with five freshmen, including four in the midfield - Ahman, Florian Popp, Jon Watkin (Doncaster, England) and Chris Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany). Cumpstone finished with six saves for the Pride to get the win, as Iona held a 13-9 edge in shots. Jesse Fullerton had two saves for Iona.

The Pride will next be in action when it returns home to face Saint Peter's on Monday evening at 6 p.m.
