BETHPAGE, NY - The
Hofstra Women's Cross Country team won the Division I race and the Pride men's
team was second in the fifth annual Hofstra University Cross Country Invitational
at Bethpage State Park Saturday afternoon.
The annual Invitational took on a different look in 2010 as the meet became
a 2x6000m relay meet. In this format, schools had several two-runner teams with
each runner completing 6K in alternating 3K legs.
The Hofstra women
recorded 10 points to top New Jersey Institute of Technology (11 points) in the
Division I race. The Pride team of sophomore Cara Mattson (East Meadow, NY) and
freshman Brittney Towner (Rocky River, OH) was Hofstra's top finisher, placing
second. Senior Riti Dhillon (Hopewell Junction, NY) and freshman Kristin Mathis
(Williamstown, NJ) placed third and juniors Meghan McCloskey (Brewer, ME) and Katie Wiking (Farmingdale, NY) finishing fifth to round out the three "teams"
scoring.
Other Hofstra women's teams included: sophomore Britany Potter (Quincy, MA) and
freshman Elizabeth Jerome (Northport, NY) placing eighth; sophomore Kirstin Kaija (East Greenwich, CT and junior Rebecca Salentino (Glen Cove, NY)
finishing ninth; and freshman Teresa Governale (Whiteston, NY) and junior Kelly Lutz (Catonsville, MD) placing tenth. The NJIT "team" of Breanne Hollenback and
Ewelina Marut finished first in the Division I race.
In the Division
II/III race, St. Joseph's College (NY) finished first with 14 points, Molloy
College was second with 19 points followed by Dominican College (25), Queens
College (48) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
On the men's side,
NJIT placed first in the Division I race with 11 points followed by Hofstra (13).
The Pride team of sophomore newcomer Daniel Rono (Eldoret, Kenya), a transfer
from New York Institute of Technology, and junior Fred Shattell (Liverpool, NY)
finished first. Hofstra seniors Phil Giackette (Ozone, Park, NY) and Tom Daly
(Mahopac, NY) placed third with senior Owen Graham (Derry, NH) and junior Matt
Wilkens (Woodbury, NY) finishing ninth.
In the men's Division II/III race, Molloy College finished first with 11 points
followed by St. Joseph's College (16), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (26) and
Queens College (49).
Hofstra will host the Walter "Brick" Stone Invitational, honoring the late Hofstra
administrator and coach of the track and field and wrestling teams in the
1940s, '50s and '60s, next Saturday, September 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
