Hempstead, N.Y. - The Hofstra Men's Soccer team hosts Saint Peter's on Monday night at 6 p.m. in a rare Labor Day match-up at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Hofstra enters the game with a 1-1 record after coming from behind to defeat Iona 2-1 on Saturday. The Gaels took a brief 1-0 lead with 19:59 left in regulation, but the Pride answered with two goals 10 minutes apart to rally for the 2-1 win. Sophomore midfielder Mike Annarumma (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) tied the score just over two minutes after the Gaels pulled ahead, and junior forward Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados) broke the tie with 7:25 left when he converted on a breakaway off a pretty chip pass from freshman midfielder Florian Popp (Bautzen, Germany).
Popp was part a four-freshmen midfield that started the game for the Pride. Freshman Lukas Ahman (Sodergard, Sweden) started for the second straight game, while Popp, freshman Chris Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany) and freshman Jon Watkin (Doncaster, England) were all inserted into the starting line-up after coming off the bench in the Pride's opener. Freshman defender Shaun Foster (Southport, England) was also in the starting line-up for the second straight game, along with regular sophomores Thomas Bekas (Brentwood, N.Y.) and Stephan Barea (Levittown, N.Y.) giving Hofstra seven underclassmen in its first 11.
Saint Peter's comes to Hofstra with an 0-1 record after a tough 2-1 home loss to Bradley on Wednesday. The Peacocks held a 19-9 edge in shots in that contest, but fell 2-1 on a tiebreaking goal with 1:23 left in regulation.
Hofstra holds a 5-0 lead in the series with the Peacocks, including a home-and-home series in 2004 and 2005. The Pride won the 2004 season opener at home 1-0, then won at Saint Peter's in 2005 by a 2-1 final.
