Hempstead, N.Y. - The Saint Peter's Men's Soccer team scored a goal in each half as it captured a 2-0 win over Hofstra on Monday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Pride drops to 1-2 on the season, including back-to-back home losses in the same season for the first time since 2003. Saint Peter's levels its record at 1-1 with the win.
Saint Peter's took a 1-0 lead at the 18:56 when it received a free kick just outside the Hofstra penalty area after an inadvertent hand ball. Liad Amir took the free kick and bent a shot that had Hofstra goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Kllingworth, Conn.) leaning to his right. The ball deflected off the Hofstra wall, though, and re-directed perfectly into the upper-right corner, leaving Cumpstone leaning the wrong way.
Hofstra nearly got the equalizer late in the first half as freshman midfielder Florian Popp (Bautzen, Germany) shook free at the top of the 18-yard box and rifled a shot towards the right side of the net. Saint Peter's goalkeeper Tyler Clarhaut, though, dove at full extension to make the save, and the Pride was called offside on the rebound.
Saint Peter's then got an insurance goal in the second half as Dmitri Pelts cracked a shot on a counter-attack inside the right post. Mauricio Jimenez started the play with a flick at midfield and Lebogang Pila made a long run up the middle, drawing the defense and laying the ball off to his left. Pelts ran onto it with a head of steam and hit a blast inside the upper-left corner.
Hofstra finished with a 15-10 edge in shots on the day, but could not beat Clarhaut, who had five saves. Cumpstone finished with two saves for Hofstra.
The Pride will next be in action when it travels to the Brown Soccer Classic, facing Yale on Friday at 5 p.m. and Brown on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
