Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra will hit the road again when
the Pride travels to Northeastern to face the Huskies on Saturday at noon in a
Colonial Athletic Association matchup. The game will be televised locally on
MSG+ and the audio broadcast can be heard through Pride Zone on GoHofstra.com.
The Pride (7-15, 1-9) is coming off one of its best
defensive performances of the season in their previous game against George
Mason. Hofstra held Mason to just 31.9 percent shooting—including 17.4 percent
on field goals in the opening half—and held a lead inside of two minutes before
the Patriots rallied for a 55-50 win.
Hofstra will be looking to split the two-game season
series against Northeastern (10-10, 6-4) and extract revenge after the Huskies
squeaked out a 64-62 victory at the Mack Sports Complex on Jan. 11.
Hofstra holds a 17-13 all-time lead in the series between
the schools. Northeastern junior guard Jonathan Lee lifted the Huskies to the
win in the series opener earlier this month when he scored a game-high 21 points
on 9-of-13 shooting.
The Huskies are coming off a one-point
win against Delaware and have won their last three games at home. Lee continues
to drive Northeastern's offense, averaging 14.7 points and hitting 33
three-pointers. Junior guard Joel Smith is another threat in the NU guard-heavy
offense. Smith is averaging 11.9 points and has racked up 50 assists to
complement Lee's 64 helpers. Freshman swingman Quincy Ford is the third NU
player to average double figures, entering Saturday with a 10.4 scoring average
and 4.9 rebounds.
Like Northeastern, Hofstra is also led
by its veteran guards. Senior Mike Moore is averaging 19.4 points for the
league's top mark. Against a Mason team with just one CAA loss, Moore scored a
game-high 18 points and racked up six assists, marking the most assists he's
had in a single game since transferring from Fordham after the 2008-09 season.
Saturday could mark a historic day for
Nathaniel Lester. The senior forward enters
the Northeastern game with 984 career points. With just 16 more, Lester will
become just the 30th player in program history to crack the 1,000 point mark
for Hofstra. Moore also has more than 1,000 career points, though
513 came during Moore's two seasons at Fordham.
Head coach Mo Cassara's team will be looking to
duplicate its defensive intensity last game after forcing 18 Mason turnovers. Hofstra held the Patriots to 17.4 percent shooting from the field
in allowing just 19 points heading into halftime.
The Pride forced Mason to miss 17 of their first 20 field goal attempts. The 19
points marked the lowest single-half output for a Hofstra opponent this season
and the fewest points since the Pride held Northeastern to 24 opening-half
points. It was the lowest combined scoring half for any Hofstra game this
season.
Junior guard Stevie Mejia also is coming off his first five-assist game since joining Hofstra from Rhode Island. Mejia has nine assists combined in the last two games against the CAA's elite in VCU and Mason.
