Hempstead, N.Y. - After enduring a stretch of five games
in 11 days, a rested Hofstra men's basketball team will be looking to get back
on the winning track when the Pride hosts Towson in a Colonial Athletic
Association meeting on Wednesday at 7 p.m. from the Mack Sports Complex.
Hofstra (7-16, 1-10 CAA) will be looking to rebound from
a three losses last week. The Pride showed positive signs in its last two
games, holding a lead in the final two minutes against first-place George Mason
University before racing to an early five-point edge at Northeastern on
Saturday.
Facing Towson (1-22, 1-10) has historically brought out
the best in the Pride. Hofstra holds a 35-19 lead in the all-time series
between the two teams, including six straight wins. The Pride has swept the
season series in each of the last three seasons. Last year, Hofstra recorded a
12-point win at home and 14-point road
victory.
"We have to remain positive and find a way to fight
through this ," Hofstra head coach Mo Cassara said. "Towson has been really competitive
lately and they'll be coming in here with some confidence."
The last Towson win over Hofstra came in the opening round of the 2008 CAA
Tournament in Richmond. Six of the last seven Hofstra wins have come by double
figures, including each of the last three meetings at the Towson Center.
But the Tigers will come to New York
with momentum after registering their first victory of the season. Towson
snapped a Division I-record 41-game losing streak with a 66-61 home victory
over UNC Wilmington on Saturday in a CAA matchup. The Tigers are still being out-scored by an
average of 20.6 points per game and enter the Hofstra contest averaging 36.6
percent shooting from the field while allowing opponents to hit 45 percent of
its field goal attempts.
A
key milestone is in reach for senior forward Nathaniel Lester, who needs just
10 points to become the 30th player in program history score 1,000 career
points for Hofstra. Lester is averaging 13.8 points and is the team's leading
rebounding with 6.4 boards per contest. Lester has scored in double figures in
19 of the team's 23 games this season.
Fellow
senior Mike Moore is also closing in on that benchmark. The guard has already logged more than 1,400 career
points, though he can also become a member of Hofstra's 1,000-point club
despite being only in his second season with the school (Moore played his first
two seasons at Fordham). Moore has 934 points for the Pride since his first
campaign in 2010-11.Moore likely will become the 31st player in program history
to reach the mark, assuming Lester scores 10 points before Moore tallies 66.
For his career, Moore just needs 53 points to reach 1,500.
Moore's 19.3 scoring average is the best in the league and his 1.8 steals per
game is the sixth-highest ranking in the CAA.
Hofstra's
offense has been led by its veteran guards. Junior Stevie Mejia logged 18
minutes off the bench at Northeastern, scoring four points while grabbing six
rebounds, representing the most in a single game since he joined the Pride
after transferring from Rhode Island.
Though
the Pride and Tigers are tied for last in the CAA, Hofstra has done well in
hustle stats. Junior forward David Imes tied a career high with four steals
against the Huskies, helping the Pride finish with 10 steals total as the squad
scored 18 points off turnovers. Imes scored 10 points and grabbed eight
rebounds, finishing just shy of his second double-double of the season.
Despite its record,
Towson does have talent. Senior forward Robert Nwankwo is averaging close to a
double-double, scoring 11.5 points and grabbing nine rebounds per contest. Sophomore
forward Marcus Damas is the team's leading scorer at 12.2 points per game. The
Tigers can also alter shots down low, averaging 4.4 blocks, led by the 6-8 Nwankwo's
60 rejections.
To combat Nwankwo
and the 6-7 Damas, sophomore forward Stephen Nwaukoni will be looking to build
on his six-point; five-rebound effort against the Huskies. Nwaukoni is third on
the team in total rebounds with 114 even though he's come off the bench in 10
games this season. His 49 offensive rebounds trails only Lester (62) for the most on
the squad.
