Hempstead, N.Y. - The Hofstra men's basketball team will
be looking for its second straight home Colonial Athletic Association victory
on Saturday when the Pride hosts Georgia State at 4 p.m. from the Mack Sports
Complex.
Hofstra (8-16, 2-10) will be looking to extend its
winning streak in the series against Georgia State to four games with the last Panthers
victory coming in the 2008-09 season. The meeting will be the 10th all-time meeting between the programs.
Hofstra
has dominated the series since the
Panthers joined the CAA in 2005-06, holding a 8-1 lead in the all-time matchups. In
2009-10, the teams met in the regular season finale at Hofstra, which the Pride
won 87-74, then in a rematch a week later at the CAA Tournament, which Hofstra captured,
68-67. The Pride posted a 79-68 road
victory in the only matchup between the teams last season.
Georgia State (15-8, 7-5) features a
balanced squad that is looking to get hot entering the regular season's final
month. The Panthers will enter Long Island with the CAA's third-best scoring offense
by averaging 67.4 points. Defensively, the squad second in scoring defense in
holding opponents to just 58.4 points for a plus-nine scoring margin.
On offense, GSU has three players averaging in double figures. Senior guard
Jihad Ali is pacing the Panthers with a 12.6 points. Ali also has a connection
to Hofstra as his older sister, India, played four seasons for the Pride from
2004-08.
The Pride has
continued to depend on veterans to pace the offensive attack. Senior guard Mike Moore is coming off a 28-point effort in Hofstra's 74-49 win over Towson in the
previous game. Moore, whose 19.6 scoring average leads the CAA, has scored
20-plus points in 10 of the unit's last 18 games.
Senior forward Nathaniel Lester finished just two
rebounds short of a double-double as the Pride picked up its first home league
win of the season. Lester scored 19 points against the Tigers. The evening
included a milestone for the veteran as Lester became just the 30th player in
program history to score 1,000 career points for Hofstra. With 1,009 points, Lester needs just nine
more to tie John Irving (1974-77) for 29th place on the team's all-time list.
Moore will be looking to be the
31st player to join the list and needs just 38 more points to do it. Moore has
1,475 career points, though 513 came in his two seasons with Fordham. Despite
only playing in his second year, Moore is on pace to finish his Hofstra career
with 1,119 points if he maintains his average through the Pride's guaranteed final
eight games, putting him on pace for 24th place on the program's leaderboard.
Moore and Lester continue to be the offensive catalysts.
The duo has combined for 807of Hofstra's 1,567 points this season, comprising more
than 50 percent of the team's total point production.
To help facilitate the offense, Hofstra head coach Mo Cassara saw encouraging signs in the Towson game. Point guards Dwan McMillan
and Stevie Mejia combined for 10 of the Pride's 17 assists. With Moore tallying
a career-high five steals, Hofstra built a 35-10 edge in the
points-off-turnovers category.
McMillan tallied six assists, four points and two steals
in 25 minutes for his ninth five-assist game of the season. Mejia contributed
four assists in 21 minutes off the
bench.
