Hempstead, NY – Tied for the best start in the program's Division I history (since 1982-83), the Hofstra Women's Basketball team will be seeking its 17th win of the season on Sunday when it hosts Old Dominion at 2 p.m.
With a win, the 2011-12 Pride (16-5, 8-2 CAA) will take over sole possession of the best start in program history as the 2006-07 team started the year with a 16-6 mark en route to a 26-8 record and a spot in the quarterfinals of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
Hofstra earned a 82-75 victory over William & Mary on Thursday to complete the season sweep of the Tribe. Led by junior forward Shante Evans, who posted 19 points and 10 rebounds, Hofstra got a trio of double-doubles in the contest. It marked the first time since December 9, 2010 that the Pride had achieved that as senior guard Candice Bellocchio added 14 points and 11 rebounds against the Tribe and senior center Marie Malone picked up her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pride is currently alone is second place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) standings with the 8-2 mark. Hofstra trails only Delaware in the standings as the Blue Hens are 10-0 in league play and 19-1 overall. Delaware visits the Mack Sports Complex on Thursday, February 16.
Old Dominion is 7-15 overall and 4-6 in CAA play. Hofstra defeated the Lady Monarchs down in Norfolk back on January 15 by the score of 81-68. Evans had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Malone had a career-high 20 points along with nine rebounds. Senior guard Nicole Capurso also had a solid game with 20 points as well.
Tia Lewis leads Old Dominion in scoring and rebounding with 18.2 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. She is the lone Lady Monarch to average in double digits.
Evans is averaging team-bests of 17.8 points and 10.3 rebounds for Hofstra, which is also getting double figure scoring from sophomore guard Katelyn Loper (13.9 ppg) and Capurso (11.5 ppg).
