James Madison junior Casey Ancarrow has been selected as the 2012 CAA preseason women's lacrosse Player of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches. James Madison leads the preseason all-conference team with four selections, while Towson had three selections. Drexel and William & Mary each fielded two, and Hofstra and Old Dominion both had one representative.
A reigning Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) All-American pick and first team All-CAA selection in 2011, Ancarrow is coming off a season which she netted a team-high 43 goals. Her 16 assists was third-best for the Dukes last year, who open the year with a conference-best No. 9 ranking in the IWLCA preseason poll. Ancarrow also added 24 ground balls and 22 draw controls for JMU in a year ago.
Joining Ancarrow on the preseason All-CAA squad are teammates Cally Chakrian, Ashley Kimener and Ariel Lane. A three-year starter and second team all-conference honoree a year ago, Chakrian returns for her senior season on the Dukes' backline after leading the team with 42 draw controls, 17 caused turnovers and ranking third with 25 ground balls a year ago. Kimener, a senior midfielder, tallied 23 goals last season and added 21 ground balls for the Dukes'. Rounding out the James Madison preseason All-CAA roster is Lane, a senior attacker, who is primed for a breakout campaign after finishing third on the team in goals (34), assists (7) and draw controls (28) in 2011.
Among Towson's three selections this year is senior goalkeeper Mary Teeters, who ranked second in the CAA with a .476 save percentage and fourth with a 9.23 goals-against-average en route to a first team All-CAA selection last season. Joining Teeters is junior defender Alexa Demski, who finished her sophomore campaign leading the Tigers with 27 caused turnovers and second on the squad with 39 ground balls. Junior midfielder Ashley Waldron ranked second for Towson in 2011 with 24 goals, while contributing a team-best 30 draw controls.
Drexel posts two representatives in senior attacker Charlotte Wood and junior midfielder Kelli Joran. Wood ranked second in the league last season with 46 scores, recording at least one goal in each of the Dragons regular season games. She also posted a team-best 52 points in 2011. Joran returns after posting all-around numbers last season, ranking first amongst the Dragons in draw controls with 27, third with 25 goals and posting 21 ground balls.
Junior attacker Krystin Mackrides and senior defender Denise Lenihan represent William & Mary. Mackrides will be an offensive force for the Tribe, after netting 35 goals and dishing out 12 assists a year ago. Lenihan will anchor the William & Mary defense after causing 12 turnovers and picking up 25 ground balls in 2011.
Rounding out the preseason squad are midfielders Hofstra's Jill Maier and Old Dominion's Lisa Bernadini. One of the top offensive threats in the CAA, Maier was third in the league with 2.31 goals per game last year and tallied 37 scores en route to earning first team All-CAA honors. Bernadini ranked in the league's top-five with 34 goals and 16 goals, while picking up first team conference accolades as a Lady Monarch last season.
