Hempstead, NY - Kenny Jackson drew a bases loaded walk in
the bottom of the 11th inning to force in Danny Poma with the
winning run and cap off a two-run inning as Hofstra rallied for a 4-3 win over
Georgia State Friday evening at University Field.
Georgia State had gone ahead 3-2 in the top of the inning
after Hofstra forced extra innings with a run in the eighth.
The Pride, winners of four straight games, improve to 15-12
overall and 7-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Georgia State falls to 14-17,
5-5 in league action.
Cody Normand pitched two innings of relief to get the win,
allowing two hits and one run to move to 2-0 on the year. Jake Dyer (2-3) took
the loss for GSU, allowing four hits and three runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Aidan McLaughlin was the pitcher who had walked Jackson, but Dyer was
responsible for Poma's run.
Hofstra had taken a 1-0 lead in the second as T.J. Thomas
walked, stole second and scored on Dalton Rouleau's single. The Panthers took
the lead in the fourth, 2-1, as Kody Adams had an RBI triple and then scored on
a wild pitch by Pride starter Jared Rogers.
The game stayed that way until the eighth when Hofstra
pushed a run across to tie the score. Thomas started the rally by reaching on
an error and was pinch-run for by Taylor Stuart. Kevin Flynn singled to Dyer to
put runners on first and second. Matt Reistetter then walked to load the bags.
Austin Nyman reached on a fielder's choice and Stuart scored the tying run.
The Pride had a chance to win in the ninth as the first two
batters reached, but Dyer got a double play and a ground out to escape
unscathed. The Panthers put together a two-out rally in the 11th to
go ahead, 3-2. Caden Bailey reached on an infield single and advanced to second
on an error on the play. Daniel Blaustein walked and Scott Sarratt singled
through the left side to drive in the go ahead run.
But Hofstra got one out walks to Rouleau and Poma, which
knocked Dyer out of the game. McLaughlin came in and promptly gave up a
run-scoring single to Matt Ford to tie the game at 3-3 and put runners at the
corners. A wild pitch advanced Ford to second and the Panthers chose to walk
Jared Hammer intentionally to load the bases for Jackson. McLaughlin fell
behind 3-0 before grooving a fastball with Jackson taking all the way. But his
fifth pitch was low, giving Hofstra the win.
Ford finished the day 4-for-6 with a double, while Poma had
three hits on the day including his 18th double of the year. Rouleau
added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Rogers went five strong innings for the Pride, allowing
three hits and two runs with three strikeouts.
Bailey was the only Panther with multiple hits as he had two
of Georgia State's seven on the day.
The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. John Tiedemann gets the start for the Pride against Ben Marshall of the Panthers.
