Hempstead, NY - Hofstra starter John Tiedemann went 8 2/3
innings before giving way to Brett Schreiber to escape a two-out, bases-loaded
jam as the Pride posted a 6-2 win over Georgia State Saturday afternoon at
University Field.
The win, Hofstra's fifth consecutive, clinched a series
victory for the Pride over the Panthers for the first time since 2008. The
Pride runs their record to 16-12, 8-3 in the CAA. Georgia State falls to 14-18,
5-6 in league action.
Tiedemann allowed nine hits, four walks and five strikeouts
before being relieved by Schreiber in the ninth. The sophomore reliever got Joel
Van Asch to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game and strand three
runners and get his first save.
Hofstra scored a run in the first as Kenny Jackson drove in
Danny Poma with a single. The Pride pushed two more runs across in the third as
Jackson once again delivered an RBI single that scored Matt Ford and Kevin Flynn had one of his own that plated Jackson.
Hofstra's running game manufactured a run in the fourth as
Dalton Rouleau stole third and scored on a throwing error on the play.
The Panthers would finally breakthrough in the fifth with a
two-out rally. Scott Sarratt singled and went to second on a walk. Van Asch
then singled to right center for GSU's first run of the day.
Hofstra added two insurance runs with a two-out rally of its
own in the eighth. Poma had a run-scoring single and Jared Hammer drew a bases
loaded walk.
The Panthers got to Tiedemann in the ninth loading the bases
with two singles and a walk. Tiedemann was able to get two outs in the frame,
but gave up an infield single on a close play at second that scored GSU's
second run. That ended Tiedemann's day after 116 pitches and Schreiber needed
just four to get the final out.
Jackson finished the day 4-for-5 with two RBIs, while
Rouleau was 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Hofstra had 17 hits on the day and
seven of the nine batters in the Pride lineup had hits.
Drew Shields and Caden Bailey were the only Panthers with
two hits on the day.
Hofstra will look for its first ever sweep of Georgia State
Sunday at Noon. Dave Jesch will start for the Pride against Max Schmitz in a
battle of two freshmen hurlers.
