Hempstead, NY – Sophomore catcher
Matt Reistetter lined a two-out triple down the right field line in the eighth inning that gave Hofstra a 4-3 lead, and the Pride would go on to add another run en route to a 5-3 victory over Georgia State on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
The win was Hofstra's sixth straight.
It is
Hofstra's longest win streak since a similar six-game streak in 2010.
In total, Hofstra scored four times in the eighth inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit on its way to the 5-3 victory.
The win gives Hofstra its first-ever sweep of Georgia State as the Pride improved to 17-12 overall and 9-3 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Georgia State slips to 14-19 and 5-7 in league play with the loss.
Hofstra got on the board first in the contest as junior first baseman
Jared Hammer walked and was immediately brought home courtesy of a RBI double from sophomore outfielder
Kenny Jackson.
The Panthers would knot the score at one an inning later as GSU put two runners on before a ground out from designated hitter Joel Van Asch scored third baseman Drew Shields.
The contest would remain tied at one until the sixth inning when Georgia State added a pair of runs.
First baseman Brandon Williams got the inning started for the Panthers as he reached base on a fielding error by Hofstra and then advanced to second on a throwing error. Williams would move to third on a wild pitch before scoring Georgia State's second run of the game on an RBI single from right fielder Landon Bennett. Bennett moved to second on an error by the Pride and he would eventually tally GSU's third run of the game as second baseman Greg Bowder doubled to right center to drive home Bennett.
Just as they have done on multiple occasions this season, including on Friday in the Pride's 4-3 extra inning victory, Hofstra came alive in the eighth inning to capture the win.
Hammer and Jackson both walked with one out before Georgia State brought in Aidan McLaughlin to pitch. McLaughlin would get center fielder
Taylor Stuart to fly out to center field before Hofstra mounted a two-out rally. Senior designated hitter
Kevin Flynn got Hofstra going with a single to center that scored Hammer to close the deficit to 3-2 in favor of the Panthers. Reistetter would then step to the plate and drill the 2-0 pitch down the right field line to give Hofstra the 4-3 advantage. After a walk by third baseman
Austin Nyman, junior shortstop
Dalton Rouleau singled to center to score Reistetter and give the Pride a much-needed insurance run.
Georgia State would have a chance in the ninth as the Panthers put the first two batters on with singles before sophomore
Bryan Verbitsky got back-to-back strikeouts and then a batter's interference ended the contest.
Sophomore
Brett Schreiber earned his second win of the season as he worked a scoreless eighth before Verbitsky picked up his second save of the season, allowing two hits and striking out two in the ninth inning.
Freshman
Dave Jesch went six innings for the Pride, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs (one earned).
Seven different Pride players each had one hit for Hofstra, with Reistetter (two), Rouleau (one), Jackson (one) and Flynn (one) accounting for the RBIs. Hammer walked twice and scored a pair of runs, while Jackson, Flynn and Reistetter also scored runs for the Pride.
Bennett went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Panthers, while Williams had two hits and a run scored.
McLaughlin took the loss for GSU, falling to 0-2 this season, as he allowed two runs and two hits in a third of an inning. Max Schmitz started for Georgia State, working six innings and allowing three hits and one run.
Hofstra returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts New York Tech at 3 p.m.
