Towson, MD - Danny Poma had three hits and two runs scored,
and Matt Ford and Jared Hammer each drove in two runs to lead Hofstra to a 7-1
win over Towson in the second game of a Colonial Athletic Association series
Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Field.
Hofstra wins its 30th game of the year and improves to
30-19, 17-9 in the CAA. Towson slips to 23-28, 12-14 in league play. The
30-wins mark the first 30-win season in the history of the Hofstra Baseball
program, which dates back to 1938.
Towson took a 1-0 lead in the first as Brandon Gonnella led
off with a single and went to third on a hit and run single by Zach Fisher.
Dominic Fratantuono drove in the run with a ground out to second.
The Pride went ahead in the third with a two-out rally.
Austin Nyman, Poma and Dalton Rouleau had consecutive singles with Rouleau
driving in the first run. After a walk to Ford loaded the bases, Hammer had a
two-run single to put the Pride up, 3-1.
Hofstra added two more runs in the seventh as Poma was hit
by a pitch and went to third on a double by Rouleau. Ford then drove in both
runs with a single to right field to make it 5-1. The Pride tacked on another
insurance run in the eighth as Matt Reistetter and Taylor Stuart had
back-to-back singles and following a fielder's choice, Poma singled to plate
Reistetter for a 6-1 advantage.
Kenny Jackson had an RBI double in the ninth to drive in
Ford, who had singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches to make
it a 7-1 game.
John Tiedemann improved to 7-3 on the season after allowing
one run on five hits over six innings of work. Andrew Barbarino pitched three
scoreless frames, allowing one hit to notch his second save.
Kyle Paul (2-4) took the loss for Towson, allowing three
runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Rouleau, Ford, Jackson and Reistetter each had two hits for
the Pride, which collected 15 base hits on the day. Gonnella was the only Tiger
to have more than one hit as he recorded two.
The teams play the rubber game of the series tomorrow
afternoon at 1 p.m.
