Harrisonburg, VA - Delaware starter Eric Young threw a complete
game, allowing 10 hits and three runs with seven strikeouts as third-seeded
Delaware upset second-seeded Hofstra, 11-3, at the Colonial Athletic
Championship Thursday night at Eagle Park at Veteran's Memorial Park.
Delaware (29-25) advances in the winner's bracket and will
face top-seeded UNCW Friday at Noon. Hofstra will meet the winner of Thursday's
final contest between 5 VCU and 6 Towson in an elimination game Friday at
3:30 p.m.
The Blue Hens scored twice in the top of the first as DJ
Long led off with a single and after a strikeout, went to second on a single by
Jimmy Yezzo. A single by Alex Maruri loaded the bases. Tyler Powell plated the
first run with a ground out to third and a second run came in on an infield
single from Joe Giacchino. Pride starter John Tiedemann (7-5) hit EJ Stoltzfus
to load the bases, but escaped further damage by getting Brock Niggebrugge to
fly out to right field.
Delaware added a run in the second as Nick Ferdinand reached
on a single and scored on Yezzo's double to the wall in centerfield. The Blue
Hens broke open the game in the third, scoring seven times to take a 10-0 lead.
Ferdinand had a three-run double in the inning, while Maruri added a two-run
double.
The Blue Hens pushed across their 11th run in the fourth as
Ty Warrington scored from second on a wild pitch that Hofstra catcher Matt Reistetter couldn't locate.
Hofstra (33-21) finally broke through in the fifth as
Reistetter led off with a single and later came in on a single by Danny Poma.
The Pride added two runs in the seventh as T.J. Thomas launched a two-out, solo
home run to straight away center field. The homer was Thomas' team-leading
eighth of the year. Austin Nyman and Poma then strung together consecutive
singles to put runners on the corners and executed a double steal with Nyman
scoring to make it 11-3.
Young improved to 6-4 on the season with the win. The Blue
Hens had 16 hits on the day with Warrington collecting three and six other
players with two hits each. Ferdinand had three RBIs, while Maruri and Powell
had two each.
"I think we need to tip our cap to
Eric Young," said Hofstra Coach John Russo. "That was a great game pitched by
him."
Hofstra got two hits
from Poma, Reistetter and Thomas. Tiedemann was charged with nine runs (four
earned) on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Brett Schreiber allowed four hits
and two runs in 2 1/3 innings of work before Gregg Lettini (two scoreless
innings), Andrew Barbarino and Thomas (one scoreless inning each) held the Blue
Hens without a run.
Hofstra, which had a first round
bye, hadn't played since Saturday and, due to rain on Wednesday, was not able
to get in a practice other than some indoor hitting. "Sitting around for the
better part of two days almost probably wasn't to our advantage," said Russo. "The
guys were so anxious to get out there and play, but I'm really happy with the
way we ended the game. We shut them down the last five."
