PRIDE IN THE COMMUNITY
Hofstra University student-athletes were active in the
community this spring. Members from our 17 athletic teams combined on 12
community service projects, ranging from visiting schools and hospitals, raking
leaves at local homes, to fundraisers for a few terrific organizations. Hofstra student-athletes have shown
their dedication by giving their time and talents to the concept of helping
others in their community time and time again.
Below are some of the projects that our student-athletes
took part in this spring semester.
Girl
Scout Day; February 10
Student-athletes from our women's soccer, field hockey,
volleyball, and women's lacrosse teams took part in this event that gathered
troops for an evening of recreation and camaraderie amongst the Girl Scouts of
Nassau County.
Reading
With Pride; March 2
Members of the following teams traveled to local elementary
schools and read to children from pre-k to first grade. The event recognized
the birthday of Dr. Seuss, and his message on the importance of reading for
children.

Special
Olympics of Long Island Polar Plunge; March
Team members from women's soccer, field hockey, and women's
lacrosse teamed up and plunged into the frigid waters of the Long Island Sound
in an effort to raise funds for the Special Olympics of Long Island. Hofstra
student-athletes raised over $2,500 and had a terrific experience while helping
out a wonderful organization.
St.
Baldrick's Day at Hofstra University; March 14
Men's soccer coaches Richard Nuttall and Jonathan Adams participated
in this event by shaving their heads in support of children's cancer research.
The coaches were part of a team that raised $19,000 for the foundation. Members
of our field hockey team helped promote the event by hanging flyers around
campus the week before the event. On the day of the event, members of our men's
tennis team assisted with organizing participants and clean up.
Ronald
McDonald House; March 18
Members of our women's lacrosse team traveled to the Ronald
McDonald House of Long Island where they prepared a brunch for patients going
through cancer treatments, along with their families and loved ones.
Long
Island Children's Museum Circus Walk; March 19
Hofstra University student-athletes from our women's cross
country team took part in this year's Long Island Children's Museum Circus Walk.
The students helped set-up barriers and secure the street for the parade, as
well as interacted with young children who were in attendance.
HEADStrong
Event at Hofstra University; March 31
Our men's lacrosse team, in conjunction with the Colleluori
family, held a day of fundraising for the HEADStrong, while the Pride took on
Towson University. Members of our wrestling team volunteered throughout the day
to help run the merchandise tent for HEADStrong
Volleyball
Breast Cancer Tournament; April 14
The Hofstra University volleyball team hosted a tournament
on April 14 in which all proceeds were donated to breast cancer
research and advocacy.
Big
Brothers Big Sisters Of Long Island Clinic; April 18
Members of our men and women's soccer teams spent the
afternoon hosting a recreational day on campus for the Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Long Island. The afternoon was filled with soccer games and drills that
stressed the importance of fitness and exercise.
Think
Pink Game; April 24
The Pride softball team wore pink uniforms and the funds
raised from the sale of merchandise were donated to help raise awareness for
breast cancer research.
Let All
The Children Play Festival; May 5
Team members from the Hofstra men's basketball team took
part in the opening day festivities for the Let All The Children Play Inclusive
Playground in Eisenhower Park. The team played games and were involved in the many
activities of the day for young children with special needs.
The INN; May
10, 2012
Members of our women's basketball team took a visit to the
Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN) in Hempstead, NY. Student-athletes helped the less
fortunate of the community by serving meals and interacting with visitors.
