Hempstead, N.Y. - The Hofstra men's basketball team added another player to its roster as the team announced today that former Hawaii guard Shaquille Stokes has transferred to the Pride.

Stokes, a 5-foot-11 point guard, averaged 8.4 points and 2.2 assists as a freshman for Hawaii last season. The Harlem, N.Y. native will have three years of eligibility remaining. Hofstra will appeal to the NCAA for a hardship waiver in the hopes of having Stokes eligible for the 2012-13 season.

"We're excited to add Shaquille and all the positive attributes he will bring to our team," Hofstra head coach Mo Cassara said. "He improved as the season progressed at Hawaii and we think he'll be a strong addition to our backcourt."

While playing for the Warriors, Stokes registered a plus-10 differential in assists to turnovers and was third on the team with 35 total three-pointers in shooting 33 percent from beyond the arc as a true freshman. Stokes appeared in 30 games, making 12 starts. The former Lincoln High School standout scored in double figures in 13 games, including a pair of 20-point outputs. The off-guard also played well in his first taste of playoff action, averaging 19 points in starting both WAC Tournament games for Hawaii.

Stokes was named the New York City Player of the Year by the New York Daily News as a senior and was a first-team New York Post All-City performer. In his final high school season, he averaged 18.4 points and led Lincoln to the PSAL championship game.
