Harrisonburg, Va. - Sophomore midfielder Sam Scolarici
scored a goal for the third consecutive game but Hofstra couldn't overcome an
early deficit in falling, 2-1, to Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at a neutral
site on James Madison's campus.
Scolarici (Aldie, Va.) headed in a cross from the right
touchline in the 79th minute to cut Georgetown's lead to 2-1. The Hoyas held on
for the win as Hofstra fell to 2-1 on the season and split the two-game
Fairfield Inn By Marriott Invitational after besting Temple on Friday.
Georgetown (4-0) showed the form that led to
the Hoyas being picked third in the preseason Big East poll. Kaitlin Been took
Jessica Clinton's pass and scored from 12 yards out 15:12 into the contest to
give Georgetown the early edge.
That would be the only offense in the half as
Hofstra junior goalkeeper Emily Morphitis (London, England) made four of her
five total saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the Pride within a goal.
Neither team could find the net again until
Georgetown's Daphne Corboz put the Hoyas ahead, 2-0, by swinging a corner kick
into the far-left corner of the goal in the 72nd minute.
Hofstra answered right back when Scolarici,
who also added goals against Ohio State and Temple this season, picked up her
third of the campaign at 78:53.Junior Amber Stobbs (London, England) sent a
cross to Scolarici, who buried it for her eighth career goal. After notching
five goals as a freshman, she is now more than halfway to reaching that mark
before September of the new season.
But Hofstra could not generate another shot
after making it 2-1, falling to Georgetown in the first all-time meeting
between the schools. Hoyas goalkeeper Emma Newins finished with three saves to
keep Georgetown undefeated.
Freshman Leah Galton (Harrogate, England),
who picked up her first career point with an assist against Temple, was the
only Hofstra player with two shots-on-goal.
Scolarici, Stobbs and Galton were named to the All-Tournament
team for their efforts with the trio combining for six points (two goals and
two assists) during the two-game stretch.
Hofstra will next be in action on Friday when
head coach Simon Riddiough's team faces Colgate on Princeton's campus in the
Princeton Invitational at 5 p.m.
