Poughkeepsie,
N.Y. - Senior forward Shante Evans scored 19 points and grabbed 14 boards to become
Hofstra's all-time leading rebounder, but Marist's Casey Dulin scored 25 as the
Pride fell to the Red Foxes, 85-70, on Wednesday night in a non-conference
matchup at McCann Arena.
Evans now has
1,045 career boards to move past Kate Gordon on Hofstra's all-time list. Gordon
collected 1,031 career rebounds in a career that spanned 1994-98. But Hofstra
fell to 1-4 with its fourth consecutive loss. Marist improved to 4-3.
Dulin scored 15
of her total points for Marist in the first half and was one of four Red Foxes
to finish in double figures. Marist connected on eight of its 13 three-pointers
in the second half while Elizabeth Beynnon scored 17.
Junior Annie Payton scored 16 points off the bench, including 12 in the opening half, to give
Hofstra a boost. The Pride also had four players score in double figures for
the second time this season as senior Candace Bond (13 points) and sophomore Andreana Thomas (12 points ) cracked the double-digit point plateau.
Thomas nearly
finished with a double-double, tying a career high with seven assists.
Dulin's layup
with 17:27 left put Marist ahead, 47-46, marking the last time Hofstra would
lead. Freshman Alexis Carter drilled three-pointer with 12:18 left to put the Pride
within 56-55 before the Red Foxes built some distance. Sydney Coffey's
three-point head-on shot opened a 61-55 lead for Marist nearly midway through
the second half, giving the home team a key cushion.
Dulin's
right-wing three-pointer with 8:36 left opened a 10-point lead for Marist. Emma
O'Connor (12 points) and Leanne Ockenden (12 points) also scored in double figures. Overall, Marist
shot 12-of-25 from beyond the arc while Hofstra went 8-for-22.
Evans, a
two-time All-American and watch list selection for the Naismith Trophy and
Wooden Award, notched her second consecutive double-double and the third in
five games this season. She is the only Hofstra player to score in double
figures in every contest during the current campaign.
Evans reached
the rebounding milestone just 1:27 into the game, grabbing her own miss to
break Gordon's 14-year record. She nearly racked up a double-double in the
first half, scoring 11 points and
grabbing nine rebounds to help Hofstra erase an eight-point deficit and take a
one-point halftime lead.
Hofstra came
all the way back on its last possession before the end of the half when Thomas
worked down the shot clock, beat man coverage with an impressive cross-over
dribble and drew a three-point play to give Hofstra 40-39 edge heading into the
locker room.
The Pride
lost for the first time in seven meetings against Marist. Hofstra has built a
second-half lead in three of five games this season. The Red Foxes, members of the
MAAC conference, entered the night ranked 10th in the CollegeInsider.com
Mid-Major poll.
Hofstra will
next be in action on Saturday against
Harvard at 1 p.m. Following that contest, the Hofstra men's team will take on
SMU at 4 p.m. to conclude the doubleheader at the Mack Sports Complex. For ticket information please call, (516) HOF-TIXX or visit GoHofstra.com.
