Norman, OK - Hofstra dropped a pair of one run games, 3-2
and 11-10 in 11 innings, as #14 Oklahoma swept a doubleheader Saturday at L.
Dale Mitchell Field.
The Pride fell to 0-3 on the season, while Oklahoma improves
to 3-0.
In the opener, Hofstra fell behind 3-0 after five innings
before rallying for two runs in the seventh. The Sooners opened the scoring in
the third inning as Matt Oberste walked and came in on a two-out triple by
Garrett Carey. Oklahoma tacked on another run in the fourth as Hector Lorenzana
led off the inning with a home run. The Sooners closed out the scoring in the
fifth following a leadoff double from
Kolbey Carpenter, a bunt single by Garrett and a sacrifice fly from Anthony Hermelyn.
The Pride rallied in the seventh as Austin Nyman led off
with a bunt single and went to second on an error on a pickoff attempt. One
batter later, Kenny Jackson blasted a two-run home run to right to make it a
one-run game. The Pride would put two more runners on in the inning, but could
not get the equalizer.
John Tiedemann allowed all three runs on eight hits in five
innings to take the loss, while Jonathan Gray earned the win after allowing two
runs on three hits in 6 2/3 innings.
In the nightcap Hofstra held a 10-7 lead going into the
bottom of the ninth, but Oklahoma rallied for three runs to tie it and then
scored an unearned run in the 11th to post an 11-10 victory.
Hofstra scored twice in the second, once in the third and
four times in the fourth to open a 7-1 lead. Matt Reistetter and Brent Hall had
RBIs in the second and Nyman had a two-run single in the fourth.
Oklahoma scored three runs on just one hit in the fourth to
cut the deficit to 7-4. But the Pride tacked on two runs in the fifth as
Jackson and Joe Perez had back to back singles and with Jackson on third, Perez
stole second and Jackson came in on an errant throw. Kevin Brantley then laced
an RBI double to plate Perez and give the Pride a 9-4 advantage.
Oklahoma scored three runs in the seventh, again on just one
hit as two walks and two hit batters forced in one run, an RBI single from
Lorenzana plated the second and the third run came in on a fielder's choice.
The Pride added what looked like an important insurance run
in the ninth on an RBI double from Reistetter, but Oklahoma rallied with three
unearned runs in the ninth to force extra innings. Dylan Neal reached on a
one-out error. A Lorenzana single moved pinch-runner Justin Burba to third and
after a fielder's choice allowed him to score, a single and a hit batter loaded
the bases. Oberste then delivered a two-run single to tie it up.
Hofstra loaded the bases with no outs in the 11th, but a fly
out and a 6-4-3 double play got the Sooners out of the inning. The Sooners would score the winning run in the
bottom of the inning as Craig Aiken led off with a single and came all the way
around to score on a dropped fly ball to center.
Brett Schreiber (0-1) took the hard-luck loss, allowing one
hit and an unearned run in an inning of relief. Jacob Evans picked up the win
with 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief. Hofstra committed five errors in the
game and seven of Oklahoma's 11 runs were unearned.
Nyman, Jared Hammer, Reistetter, Perez and Hall all had two
hits for the Pride, who wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
