Hempstead, N.Y. - Andreana Thomas and Shante Evans helped Hofstra mount a second half run from 20 points down but James Madison's Tarik Hislop recorded a game-high 24 points to stymie the comeback and lead the Dukes to a 68-60 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride at the Mack Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Pride saw a two-game winning streak end in slipped to 12-12 overall and 8-5 in league play. James Madison improved to 17-8 and 11-2 in the CAA.

Thomas and Evans each scored 16 points with Thomas scoring 14 in the second half and Evans adding 12 in the second 20 minutes. Evans finished with 12 rebounds and now has 66 career double-doubles and 16 this season.

Senior Candace Bond tallied 11 points to join Thomas and Evans in double-figures. Junior forward Anma Onyeuku grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and added seven points and fellow junior Annie Payton compiled eight points and four rebounds.

In addition to Hislop, the Dukes received 11 points and nine rebounds from Toia Giggetts and 10 points and seven caroms from Jazmon Gwathmey. Kirby Burkholder grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to go with seven points.

The Pride turned the game into a close contest in the second half. Hofstra came out slow but still tied the game at 6-6 at the 16:26 mark following a Payton three-pointer. But the Dukes scored the next nine points with Hall's lay-up giving JMU a 15-6 advantage at the 13:04 mark. The Pride hit just 1-of-16 field goal attempts in the first 7:03.

Hofstra was able to close to within seven three times over the next four minutes, the latest at 23-16 at the 9:01 mark following another Payton basket. But the Dukes responded with an 11-0 run over the next 4:04 to open up a 34-16 advantage with 4:07 to play in the half following a Hislop jumper. Five different JMU players had points in the spurt.

Carter and Bond would answer with baskets but the Dukes followed by scoring five of the next six points to take their biggest lead of the half at 39-21 at the break. The Pride hit just eight of 35 field goals attempts (8-35) and were outrebounded, 32-19 in the first 20 minutes.

Giggetts, Gwathmey and Hislop each tallied eight points for the Dukes in the first half while Payton had seven points for the Pride.

Hislop hit a jumper 19 seconds into the second half to give James Madison their biggest lead of the contest at 41-21 before the Pride mounted their near-comeback. Hofstra went on a 14-5 spurt, behind eight points from Evans, over the next 5:24 to close to within 11 at 46-35 with 13:36 remaining after an Evans lay-up.

After the Dukes scored the next five points to boost their lead to 16 at 51-35 at the 13:04 mark after a Gwathmey lay-up, Hofstra surged back behind an 18-1 run over the next 7:12 to take their first lead of the contest at 53-52 after an Onyeuku lay-up with 4:50 to play. Thomas had eight points while Bonds and Onyeuku each added four in the Pride run.

After Hislop hit a three-pointer 24 seconds later and Onyeuku hit a jumper 18 seconds after that to tie the contest at 55, Burkholder and Hislop hit baskets to open up a four-point lead. Evans brought the Pride back to within a bucket with a jumper at the 1:52 mark.

But JMU scored the next seven points including five from the charity stripe to open up a 66-57 lead with 24 seconds to play. Thomas hit a three-pointer four seconds later for Hofstra before Burkholder closed out the scoring with two free throws 18 seconds later.

Hofstra raised $1,434 for the Kay Yow Cancer Research Fund as the Pride celebrated Think Pink Day. The team also drew four figures in attendance for the second straight game with an announced crowd of 1,145 as part of Girl Scout Day.

 The Pride return to action on Tuesday, February 19 when they travel to Maryland to face the Towson Tigers at 7 p.m.
