Brookline, MA - Kevin Ferguson threw 8 2/3 innings of one-run ball and Conor Lyons had two hits and three RBIs to lead Northeastern to a 9-1 win over Hofstra Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Hofstra fell to 14-18 overall and 4-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the loss. Northeastern improved to 18-13, 7-8 in the CAA with the win.
Northeastern chased Pride starter Chris Harkey, who was making his first start of the year, after 2 1/3 innings. Harkey surrendered six hits and five runs (three earned) and fell to 2-1 on the season. The Huskies scored twice in the first as Lyons drove in Aaron Barbosa with a double and Michael Foster plated Lyons with a single two batters later.
That was all the run support Ferguson (5-2) would need as he scattered five hits and struck out six before giving way to Brad McLean with two outs in the ninth after he put two runners on via a hit batter and a walk. Hofstra's only run came courtesy of a Jared Hammer home run in the seventh inning.
The Huskies would score three runs in the third, including one on a solo homer by Jason Vosler, and then added two runs in the fourth and two in the eighth to close out the scoring. Barbosa would finish with three hits and three runs scored for Northeastern.
Kevin Brantley had two hits and a stolen base, while Hammer, Robbie Cafiero and TJ Ehrsam each had one hit in the contest. Nick Kozlowski threw four innings of one-hit relief and struck out four batters.
Hofstra is back in action Tuesday afternoon at Monmouth in a game that was just added to the schedule this past Thursday. The Pride then travel to St. John's Wednesday. Tuesday's game begins at 3:30 p.m., and Wednesday's starts at 3 p.m.
