Hempstead, NY – Old Dominion sent 14 batters to the plate in a nine-run top of the first and went on to post a 14-5 win over Hofstra Sunday, salvaging the final game of a three-game CAA series.
Old Dominion improved to 18-16 overall with the win and 8-10 in league play. Hofstra slips to 17-20, 6-9 in the CAA.
The Monarchs opened the scoring in the first as Josh Eldridge drew a one-out walk and went to second on a bloop single from Ben Slaton that landed on the fringe of the outfield grass. Jordan Negrini and P.J. Higgins followed with RBI singles to make it a 2-0 game. Chris Livers reached on a bunt single to load the bases and Brian Beard walked to force home the third run of the inning. Tyler Urps knocked in two runs with a hard-hit single to right that made it 5-0 and ended Pride starter John Tiedemann's day after one-third of an inning. Dave Jesch came on and retired one of the four batters he faced. He hit Ben Verlander with the bases loaded and then gave up a sacrifice fly to Eldridge and a two-run double to Slaton before Graham Tebbit was called upon to try and escape the first inning. Tebbit hit his first batter before getting the third out on a flyout.
The Monarchs pushed across three more runs in the second, two on a double by Eldridge, before Hofstra scored two runs in the second, one on a fielder's choice ground out from Kevin Brantley and one on a wild pitch from ODU starter Ryan Yarbrough.
ODU would tack on runs in the fourth and seventh innings, while Hofstra would score twice more in the sixth and once in the eighth.
Joe Perez led the Pride offense with three hits and three runs. Austin Nyman, Brent Hall and Brantley each had RBIs. Tiedemann fell to 0-5 on the year after allowing seven runs on five hits.
Yarbrough went six innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits. Eldridge drove in three runs, while Verlander, Slaton and Urps knocked in two runs apiece.
The Pride return to action Tuesday at Manhattan. Game time in Riverdale, NY, is 3:30 p.m.
