Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team will host Drexel on Saturday at 4 p.m. in a contest that will have major Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship implications.
Hofstra will need a win to get into the conference tournament, which will be played on May 3 and 5 at Towson. If the Pride defeats Drexel, Hofstra will earn the three seed in the CAA Tournament and face second-seeded James Madison in the semifinals. A loss on Saturday will end the season for the Pride.
The game will also see Hofstra honors its seniors as the following players will be recognized pregame before taking the field for their final home contest: Maryann Miller, Taylor Albright, Jacquelyn Ardolino, Claire Brady, Lauren Chandler, Casey Kellogg and Jill Maier.
It will be a special day at James M. Shuart Stadium as the game will be part of a doubleheader with the Hofstra men's lacrosse team, which takes on nationally-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m. For ticket information to both games please call (516) HOF-TIXX.
Hofstra (9-7, 3-3 CAA) has seen its defense step up tremendously over the last few weeks as the Pride is allowing just seven goals per game over its last four contests, including only five goals against CAA-leading Towson on April 19 and seven goals against Delaware on April 21.
The Pride will need its offense to match its stellar defense if it hopes to advance to the CAA Championship and Hofstra will look to sophomore attack Brittain Altomare to lead the way. Altomare has a team-high 60 points on 32 goals and 28 assists this season, while also chipping in with 25 draw controls, 20 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.
It has also been a solid junior campaign for attack Julia Riemer, who ranks second on the team with 27 points on 23 goals and four assists. Freshman midfielder/attack Becky Conto has had an excellent rookie campaign as she has posted 18 points on 15 goals and three assists to rank third on the team. She also is second on the team with 46 draw controls and has 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Kelsey Gregerson and sophomore defender April Iannetta have anchored a solid Pride backline.
Gregerson has a stout 8.54 goals against average this season, to go along with her .440 save percentage. She has made 110 saves in 2013 and leads Hofstra with 43 ground balls, while chipping in with 11 caused turnovers.
Iannetta, one of the top defenders in the nation, has made her presence felt in a multitude of ways. She leads Hofstra with 47 draw controls and 32 caused turnovers, while ranking second on the team with 39 ground balls. Her overall versatility shows in other areas, as well, as she also has 10 goals and five assists to rank sixth on the team with 15 points.
Drexel enters Saturday's game with an 11-5 overall record and a 4-2 conference mark. They have won five of their last seven games, including an 11-6 win over Delaware on April 19. Alyse Maiden leads the Dragons with 50 points on 31 goals and 19 assists, while Kelli Joran is second with 43 points on 35 goals and eight assists.
