Williamsburg, VA - John Farrell and Matt Wainman combined on a four-hitter as William & Mary shut down the Pride offense in a 3-0 win Friday night at Plumeri Park. The loss snapped Hofstra's five-game winning streak.
Farrell improved to 9-1 on the season as he allowed the four hits, all singles, and struck out 10 in 7 1/3 innings. Wainman pitched the final 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit to earn his sixth save of the season for William & Mary (29-17, 12-7 CAA).
Hofstra (23-22, 8-11) got two hits from junior catcher Matt Reistetter. Jared Hammer and Chris Nardo managed the other hits for the Pride. Junior Bryan Verbitsky (2-3) made his first start of the year and took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He also struck out four batters. Chris Harkey, John Schilt, Andrew Barbarino and Gregg Sarra combined to limit the Tribe to just two hits over the final 2 2/3 innings.
William & Mary put up two runs in the fifth as Ryan Hissey led off with a single and moved to second on a bunt single from Jonathan Sarty. A fielder's choice from Jackson Shaver resulted in an out at third and then, on a potential inning-ending double play, Ryan Williams beat the relay and Sarty kept running from second to score the first run of the game. Consecutive singles from Derek Lowe and Ryan Brown drove in Williams with the second run.
Michael Katz gave the Tribe their third run with a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning.
Hissey finished with a game-high three hits for the Tribe, while Sarty added two.
Game two of the series begins at 4 p.m. Saturday.
